Q: Can you put this on your lap to draw?

Yes, specifically why I got this and I am glad I did!! :)

Q: How adjustable is it?

It has 5 notches for adjustment: from 80 degrees (almost vertical) to about 30 degrees (almost horizontal). You can also close it completely and have it lie flat.

Q: Are the edges strait?

Yes. The flat part is lightweight wood, so if left outside could warp. Otherwise nice and straight and square

Q: What is the shallowest angle at which the board maybe set?

The lowest level the board can be set up is at 0° or level with the table or floor service. There are four notched settings that the board can be set up at 65°, 56°, 50°, 40°. The board can be set at 90°. You can add more notches to get the desired level.
