Q: Are these hard backed notebooks?

Not hard backed like a hard cover book is. Probably not much thicker/stiffer than the back of standard spiral notebook.

Q: how well does it handle fountain pens?

Hello. I figured an answer is better late than never :-). These books handle fountain pens well, but it's entirely dependent upon the Nib you use as well as the ink. Different ink has different viscosity and thus, some types of inks may have bleed through. I use Noodlers ink almost exclusively for the colored inks, and I have medium and fine nibs and they perform quite well (I'll be a noodlers guy until I can't write anymore). I Also have Calligraphy nibs, and I noticed that those are heavy on the ink, so they *almost* bleed through, but not bad enough that it would interfere with writing on both sides of the paper. I would avoid cheap inks... like Higgins... It's almost like water. **NOTE** These books do not do well with Dip pens, I'm guessing due to the lack of flow control and the fact that you're using gravity to move the ink along the spine of the nib onto the paper. I had excessive bleed through with mine, however, a piece of printer paper folded in half and laid behind the page that you're writing on would catch the bleed onto subsequent pages, but would do absolutely nothing to prevent the bleed through on the back of the page your writing in. I hope that helps!!

Mine are stamped on the back Made in Vietnam. The quality if great.
