This book is so beautiful. I love it, and my 2yo son loves it. Admittedly, there is hardly any text in the book so when I’m reading it to him I add lots of my own commentary, which I really don’t mind as the imagery is so detailed and making bedtime reading more of a conversation is so special, and great for his speech development. Something about this book makes my son pick it up and bring it over to me anytime he comes across it any time of the day, and I just love that each time we read it he is reminded through the beautiful illustrations, story, and my own words to him that he is beautiful, he is sensitive, he is creative, he is special, he doesn’t have to be anything anybody tells him to be - he just has to be true to himself and that’s the BEST thing he could EVER BE. When my son is done with this book it will be going into our memory box of keepsakes to look at when he’s all grown up - there’s no way the beautiful artwork could go into the recycling bin - and the message is too important to throw away.

Gorgeous pictures. Small amounts of text but beautifully written, highlighting the strength of family bonds and individuality.

Lovely book, absolutely gorgeous illustrations. I was expecting a few more words but am not disappointed, over all a lovely way to introduce identity. And I'm going to say it a again as an art lover thoes illustration are just gorgeous and my kids love look at and trying to name all the difrent sea creatures.

It's not often that you see illustrations and think - i know those people. The pictures are just beautifully made. The story is gentle and sweet. Left me wanting more story, and more illustrations.

I love this book so much. The illustrations are amazing, original with a bit of a retro quality. Bright and beautiful images full of imagination. The story is beautiful and I always make sure I have copied in stock to give to kids I love. Everybody has received one of these books from me has been thrilled.

Where to begin?? This is an absolute joy from start to finish, from the minimalist text to the fantastic facial expressions of both Julian and his Nana, every page is a feast. The story is incredibly visual which will enable even the youngest of children to enjoy it, and would be a wonderful prompt for pictures of your or your child's own. Best of all, for me, it took me back to those heady days when my child was small and not concerned whether their playthings were for girls or boys, and just played how they wanted. Nana is the parental figure we all need in our lives... calm, accepting, enabling and Julian is completely and totally a mermaid - perfect!

Our 5 year old son loves mermaids and getting dressed up in princes dresses. We don’t make it an issue, as well, it isn’t. This book reinforces that message. Julian loves mermaids, nothing more, nothing less. It’s perfect in its acceptance. The drawings are simply gorgeous. We have a large book collection and read a lot- this book is definitely a favorite. For him, and I love reading it. Nb- our other son who is much more “laddish” and likes everything with engines and balls and superheroes is not very interested in this book.

The quality of this book is superb, just right size, good quality paper. The artwork is stunning throughout and will have you and your children wanting to look at it again and again. The story is sweet and short and will speak to any child who feels different while also being a great addition to any child's bookcase. I recommend this adorable book, and I want to adopt Julian - he's adorable!

A story, full of feeling, deliciously written and with really beautiful illustrations

This book is amazing, simple, beautiful, with a very positive message,the illustrations are truly beautiful. I recommend everything about this book !

５歳の娘が図書館で借りたものを喜んで読んでいました。とっくに返却したのに「フリアンが無い！ママ、私フリアンのマーメイドを読みたいのに無いよ！」と必死に探していたので改めて購入。娘は喜んで昼間も読み、ベッドにも持って行っています。ストーリーが美しい。孫の想いを尊重するおばあちゃんの対応に感激します。こんなおばあちゃんになりたい。イラストが逸脱です。前ページを家中に貼りたいくらい美しい。
