The product itself seems okay and I'm comfortable purchasing supplements from this company (NOW Foods), based on their reputation. NOW and several other brands use a proprietary, patented formulation called MenaQ7 that says it sources the MK-7 vitamin from naturally sourced MK-7 produced from fermented chickpeas. They also make a similar product that's sourced from soybeans but is "soy free" after it goes through a purification process. They extract the actual K-2 MK-7 vitamin itself from fermented chickpeas or soybeans (depending on the product); but the finished product does not actually contain any of the chickpea or soybean protein or whatever -- just contains the MK-7 vitamin itself that was extracted from the fermentation process. From what I've been able to determine, the proprietary patented MenaQ7 formulation that NOW and many other brands are using to supply the active ingredient vitamin is a natural product -- despite being patented. I'd prefer something that's not patented, because the fact that it has a patent implies that it's not really 100% natural. I spent many hours of frustration trying to research this issue, as the search engines don't necessarily give us easy access to unbiased information. But from what I gather, the patented MenaQ7 formulation assures the supplement companies that the MK-7 they use to manufacture their product contains a reliable dose-strength of the vitamin. Somewhat like getting USP verification to show the product reliably contains a certain strength or guaranteed amount. According to statements made by NOW and also by the company that makes MenaQ7, the MK-7 here is natural, all-trans, the most bioavailable version, and is not synthetic. In the future I may well decide to simply get my K2 directly from real food sources instead of spending money on supplements. And not give the matter any more worry or thought. Organic sauerkraut is said to be a good source of K2. But when I tried to find how much K2 is present in sauerkraut, the search engines gave wildly different results that varied from 2.75 mcg per half cup to 10 mcg per cup to 10 mcg per tablespoon. What a shame we can't get credible information and for sure can't depend on our corrupt FDA or Big Tech search engines for honest credible information. Disgusting. There are other sources of K2 like European hard cheeses made from grass-fed cows, but not the stuff made here in the U.S. from factory-farm dairy cows. The cows need to be pasture raised and grass-fed to produce the vitamin K and they don't produce the same quality nutrients when they're housed in stalls and fed grains like corn. Natural soybean natto may be the best source of K-2, but most people find natto too gross to eat. For now I'm okay with using these bottled, commercially produced NOW MK-7 capsules since I've already bought them. FYI for people who don't like to swallow big pills: these NOW brand MK-7 capsules are small and very easy to swallow. Also: They're made from a vegetable source capsule and are Halal, Kosher, vegetarian and vegan.
