X35 Roon Ready All-in-One Media Player (Black)

The Cocktail Audio X35 (my first experience with a Novatron product) is quite a diverse and powerful audio component. In essence, this is an audiophile-geared computer/multi-function home audio system hybrid that easily fits on a desktop surface or in any audio cabinet/shelving system. The traditional audio component design is simple, yet clean and attractive. The 7” LED screen makes a bold statement, but functions like a small computer screen with adjustable brightness and can even be toggled between (on/clock/off) using the CLOCK button on the remote. Overall, this is an incredibly diverse device with great user interface. Anyone in the market for a tool which easily archives all your music files in one place should certainly check out the X35, especially if you want a stand-alone device that can actually play all those files from one efficient database. But the X35 does so much more.My primary uses for this device: getting all of my CDs (1500) ripped into FLAC quality digital files, organizing all of my digital files in one place for easy playback, streaming internet radio and high definition music. In the future, I may record some material using this device as well but that is a secondary and unexplored option at this point. I have the X35 hooked up to the internet via Ethernet (the wireless option not as good) and then have analog and HDMI outputs going to my main AV receiver. I have a small USB keyboard hooked up via the front panel USB port for some data editing and input. While this is not essential, it does help speed things up during CD ripping when the Gracenote database metadata isn’t always accurate. [NOTE: Reboot the unit after plugging in the USB keyboard to allow it to recognize the device]You can change the volume output settings for the analog and digital outputs. I have both mine set to FIXED (or max) output since my AV receiver controls the volume of playback anyway, but if you are using speakers plugged directly into the X35 amp then you can set that to VARIABLE which then allows volume control with the X35’s own volume knob or remote. With the HDMI digital output connected and ON I can also receive the X35 screen on the TV I have connected with my system, although I haven’t used that function very much. That does allow you to toggle between X35/TV/BOTH. The sound output through the analog out is very high quality, so the X35 has an excellent DAC, but I do prefer the digital HDMI output through my receiver which also has an excellent DAC. The difference is subtle, however.I’ve had this unit for about 4 weeks and so I’ve not yet explored all of the options/functions yet but have spent a lot of time ripping CDs and using the phone app (Music X) and web-interface. As a result, I thought I would post a review with a few helpful observations and then follow up at a later date with more info.[Important] The X35 doesn’t come with a hard drive and so you can’t do any ripping/recording etc., but could still stream. While some may find this annoying, I like that the customer can customize this to suit their preferences and needs. You can use an internal SATA 3.5 HDD up to 8TB or 2.5 HDD or SSD up to 2TB. There is a tray that unscrews from the back of the unit for the hard drive with screw holes (and screws included) to accommodate the various drives. I chose the Samsung Evo 860 SSD 1TB drive which fastens via 4 small screws on the bottom of the drive. The tray then slides nicely into the dock on the back of the X35, simultaneously plugging in when the tray is fully inserted. I’ve read of some folks having to take the chassis off the unit to get it connected, but at least using the 2.5 SSD I had no difficulty. From the main menu you can then format the drive and then its ready to go. For back up I just got an external WD 2TB HDD and plug it in to one of the two USB ports on the back of the X35.CD RippingI’ve ripped about 300 so far. Depending on the length of the CD, it usually takes 5 to 9 minutes. The X35 rips to WAV initially and then depending on which file type you choose for storage, it does the converting in the background. Obviously you can’t back up while converting, but it only takes about another 5 minutes or less to convert the files and then you can back up. I usually do this after ripping 10 or 20 CDs of data. The metadata from Gracenote is very accurate for the most part. I usually have to change the GENRE and sometimes the date of release, but otherwise I have only had to manually type in the track titles on 2 CDs out of 300! [HINT: if the data doesn’t load when you first attempt, eject the CD and reinsert and this usually loads the data.] The cover pictures are less accurate and sometimes you have to search the provided menus (Google, Amazon, Bing, 7digital, allcovers) but the process is very easy, intuitive and pretty fast depending on your internet speed. You can rip either full albums or individual tracks. [NOTE: you can’t listen to the CD you are ripping and the main LED screen is locked to the ripping process as well (which makes sense so you can monitor progress/see any errors, etc) However, if you have your Android/Apple phone connected to your home network you can listen to any other song in the music database and the internet services are all available as well through the use of the Music X phone app]. Essentially this app lets you have full control of the unit at any time, so you can play from the database, edit the database, stream internet services or radio and even alter some settings all while ripping CDs! It’s a wonderful app with a few caveats discussed below.Cautions: Ripping failed on a few CDs, sometimes only specific tracks and usually cleaning the CD surface fixed the problem. On one CD I had ripped all of the tracks that didn’t give an error and then came back and ripped the single track that was the problem and it then was successful. That only happened once though. Also, I did encounter one mechanical failure with a CD that would not eject. It was an older CD from the early 90’s (the older CDs are thicker). I had to remove the chassis and the CD drive itself to get the CD out which is a little tedious (the screws in the top of the CD drive are really small) but not difficult and it has worked great since. I don’t like the insert/eject type CD drives for this reason (rather than the tray) and wonder how long it will work as I still have quite a few CDs to rip.Playing from the database is limited to running through the songs in each “album” folder, which initially seems disappointing as there is not continued play into the next folder of songs. However, it is easy to add albums and individual songs to Playlists and then you can mix and match in jukebox fashion that way. So there are endless possibilities for how to combine your music playlists with this software and within a given playlist you can toggle between shuffle, random, etc. You have options to create permanent playlists and then virtual playlists. Anytime you are listening to a song you can add it to any given playlist. The virtual playlist obviously wipes clean after you turn the unit off.MUSIC X App for Android/IphonesThis app is a great tool which connects wirelessly to your home network. If the X35 is on the home network (highly recommended) then you can control all of the menus of the X35 from your phone and all of the editing and the settings. In addition, it has a “virtual” version of the manual remote which is a plus because the actual manual remote is pretty large. The app had been criticized for disconnecting frequently. Here is what I’ve found to work best. Using an Android Galaxy I’ve had no problems connecting to the unit when I open the app, provided that the X35 is already on. It NEVER disconnects while I’m actively using, but it will when the app is not in use and the phone goes to screensaver/lock. If I reopen my phone and try to use the Music X app again I find it has disconnected and takes longer to reconnect or sometimes doesn’t. So what I’ve found works best is that I just close the Music X app every time I finish using it and then just reopen it when I come back to my phone to use the app. In this case it almost always reconnects within 2 to 3 seconds and works flawlessly. Where I do have more issues is with the WOL function. You can set the X35 (when off in stand-by mode) to receive a wake-up packet from the Music X app which will turn on the unit and allow you to edit and use the Music X app from your phone. I love this because sometimes I want to edit or review something in the database and I don’t have to be in front of the unit to do so. The web interface is similar in this regard (see below). In any case, sometimes I have to try 2 or 3 times to get the WOL function to work to turn the unit on from standby, but it does eventually work (as long as the units settings for WOL are in the ON position).Web InterfaceUsing another computer/laptop that is on the same network, you can go to the private URL setting (which can be found on the X35 network settings screen) and use the web-interface. Editing with this interface is even easier than with the Music X app. I think it is just easier to see all of the songs and file folders with the web interface and if you have album artwork stored on your computer/laptop that you want from your computer, or if you want to add photos (there is a photo viewer setting on the X35 as well) then it is just easier using this interface.Internet RadioThis is pretty straight-forward and uses the airable service. Searching for all of the local and international stations is easy and storing favorites a breeze so repeated searches aren’t needed.I have not yet explored recording vinyl or other audio sources or radio programs. And while I haven’t yet investigated the high-def streaming functions (Tidal), I would expect that the streaming functions of this unit will work fluidly since Novatron/Cocktail Audio has been doing that for a while now. Of course, high definition recordings can be easily added to the database via flash drive as well.Initial ImpressionThe X35 is not for everyone. Many software programs exist for ripping CDs and digital archiving. However, few are as robust, versatile and intuitive as this one, nor are they as fun. I like having a hard drive dedicated to my music collection that easily integrates with my audio system yet has the option for stand-alone high quality playback and portability and recording. It’s half the cost of similar ripper/streamers with twice the options and versatility. Reliability remains a question mark and so will follow up with issues if or when they arise. I don’t like that you can’t register the product on the website but Audio Services does provide support in North America.**Update: 9/11/2020**No problems to report. Over the course of this past 6 months I've been able to test the analog to digital recording functions. It is such an ease - just plug in the analog jacks and toggle the input to "analog" and you can test your volume levels on the X35 and adjust the recording volume before you actually start recording. This is essential with cassettes and vinyl. When changing sides on the phone or cassette deck with you can "pause" the recording on the X35 and resume easily by unpausing. This will then give you one large .caf file to work with. I usually edit the tag data at this point for the album to include album cover, title and genre and then choose "Cut to Wav" which will load the recording for editing. The tools are easy to use (just turning the big knob back and forth allows for easy scrolling to song breaks/edit points, etc. .. and you can spread the recording out nicely so that its easy to find the cut marks between songs. Once you have all of your cuts/edits/track markings you simply convert to whichever format (FLAC, AFLAC, WAV, etc.) and this will give you an "album folder" with all of the individual songs files. At this point i usually add the song titles and any other tag edits needed for each song file.Note that all of your recordings will be stored on the browser and so you have to go there to work with them after the recording is complete. Then, once you have the album or files in the format you want you can copy or move then to the music database. As far as I know, you can't record them directly into the database. But anyway, its a great way to get a high quality lossles digital recording of some of your older analog recordings. I always convert everything to lossless files, even my CDs that are ripped into the database, because they sound so much better during playback.And new with one of the recent firmware upgrades was Amazon Music so you can now access your amazon music library from the internet services section of the X35. The first time you use the service (its free) though you have to log in through the phone app (MusicX Neo) which was recently reconfigured to work with all of the Cocktail Audio players.Anyway, very pleased with this product overall. I ripped to FLAC about 1,200 CDs since purchase and only had one older (thicker) CD get stuck in the drive. I had to take the chassis off and remove the drive cover to extract the CD (which wasn't too tedious). It's not an ideal eject mechanism, but it has handled the heavy workload well overall.

I've had this X35 for about 2 years, and it is perfect for me. I wanted a device to load my CD collection - about 900 CD's, and be able to store them in a lossless format (e.g. WAV) because MP3 files sound anemic on a large stereo system. I initially bought the antenna and connected wirelessly to my home network, but that was way slow in retrieving album artwork via the internet, so I hard-wired it to the router and that is definately the way to go. At first I hooked the X35 to my stereo receiver, only using the Music Database function. After a few months I decided to try using the internal amplifiers, and was very pleased with the sound. I have a turntable and cassette player hooked up to the X35, and run 4 different sets of speakers: a large Klipsch system indoor, a set of large Klipsch outdoor speakers, a set of medium Klipsch speakers outdoors, and a set of custom built speakers in my garage that a prior owner of the house had installed. I control the selection and input level of all 4 speaker systems through a Russound 4-channel unit. I also connected a keyboard and a monitor to make it easier to use. The internal amps are 100W, and with the volume at 70, my outdoor speakers can be heard not only by me, but all my neighbors. There are many pre-programmed EQ settings, or you can customize your own. As with any device, there are a couple of features I wish it had pertaining to the creation and editing of playlists. And for some reason, the mobile app automatically limits the volume setting to 30. We first thought we'd want the mobile app to change songs when we were outside, but after building several playlists, we found we already had what we wanted, hours of quality-sounding (i.e. not MP3) music of our choosing with no interruptions. We also sometimes use the streaming and FM radio features. The X35 is manufactured by Novatron, a South Korean company, and is only carried by a few U.S. suppliers. It does require following the manual carefully in setting it up and using it, but once you get music loaded and learn how to navigate through the features, it's easy to use.

Der X35 werkelt mit 4-Ohm oder mehr Impedanz. Es ist ein Computer, Smart-Audio in Blech und Alu, Firmware derzeit im Lieferzustand X35-CA-1.0.0.r1054.Das wichtigste zur Bedienung des Computers ist für mein Empfinden die Tastatur. Ich verwende ein Rapoo-8000-Set. Zur Lautstärkeregelung sind [F2],[F3] und [F4], Pause[F5], Stopp [F6], Menü [F10], Song-Lesezeichen [F11], Wiedergabeliste [F8], Suche in der gewünschten Ansicht mit [F9] nützlich. Beim Schneiden und Vorlauf sind, wie zu erwarten, die Cursortasten (schneller zzgl. [Alt]) zu bedienen.Titelsprung funktioniert mit [Strg]+ Bildtaste jeweils. Navigieren mit [Pos1] läßt bspw. Aufnahme/Wiedergabe und Benennung im Datei-Browser zu. Ansonsten sind übliche Shortcuts Markieren [Shift]+[Pos1 bzw. Ende], [Strg]+[Shift]+Cursortaste, Kopieren [Strg]+[C], Einsetzen [Strg]+[V], [Esc] etc..Zu beachten ist, ob die gesetzten Zeichen auch per Samba-Dateiserver angezeigt werden (bsp. [>], [:] ist mit [Strg]+[Alt]+[:] möglich). Beim Benennen ist zu beachten, dass wenn ein Dateiname [/] beinhaltet, dies als Trennzeichen für ein Verzeichnis ausgewertet wird. Wird ein Dateiname im selben Verzeichnis zum zweiten Mal eingegeben, wird ohne Warnung die vorhandene Datei überschrieben.Mit Chromecast-Video war i.A. nur die erste Aufnahme nach Neustart, mit Cast-Audio völlig latenzfrei.Warum es 'nur' 3h Aufnahmezeit sein sollen, wird leider nicht erklärt. Das erinnert an die alte FAT32-Grenze.Der XLR-Eingang ist zum Musikspielen für mich am interessantesten. Mit digitalem Eingang muss man sich zumindest bei der Aufnahmeamplitude weniger Gedanken machen.Der Eisenkern brummte zuweilen, aber mit Hin- und Wegstellen ging es. HiFi ist kein Tehma, allerdings die Klangregelung mehr denn je. Ich kann nur die benutzerspezifische Regelung gebrauchen. Wünschenswert wäre pro Ein-/ und Ausgang zu regeln (zB. mit Presets), auch wenn das wieder an Tonstudio erinnern sollte.Leider vergisst der X35 nach Ausschalten seinen letzten Audioeingang, was zur Wohnzimmertauglichkeit gar nicht gut ist. Vielleicht gibt es dafür ein Update (?). Mit der Stereoqualität hab ich mich gut arrangiert, im Vergleich zu Heimkino sowieso. Klanglich fehlen mir lebhaftere Mitten, die sich aber regeln lassen. Es wirkt u.U. "trocken, fade" (Quelle CD-Qualität).Dank RISC-Technologie ist der X35 keine Heizung, das kann er dem Heimkino überlassen. Allerdings trotz Öko sollte zum Server-Betrieb die Festplattenabschaltung logischerweise ausgeschaltet sein. Dazu ist anzumerken, dass letztlich nicht Serverbetrieb (klemmt oder bootet spontan) sondern Audio relevant ist.WOL konnte ich bislang nicht nutzen (ev. sniffen, was da kommuniziert wird).Passende Hinweise gibt der X35 nicht immer oder in Englisch. Die Software zur Bedienung (App oder Web - egal) ist extrem bearbeitungswürdig und wenn sie fertig ist, bin ich auf den Preis gespannt.Ich verstehe nicht, warum die Titelnummerierung nach DB-Import von Dateien mit dem Browser nicht fortlaufend neu indiziert ist, wenn Teile durch Schneiden fehlen. Tags interessieren wohl nicht, da WAV ohnehin keine unterstützt, weshalb diese Krüke helfen soll. Somit kann die Nummerierung hier auch ausgeschaltet bleiben. Die Reihenfolge von Dateien ist vor Import zu nummerieren. Die Reihenfolge exportierter Dateien ist mit der DB (Playlist) abzugleichen.Bei den Tags am Besten vor dem Stückeln den Tag der Aufnahme bearbeiten, sonst hat man am Ende mehr damit zu tun.Bei UPNP/DLNA bietet sich die Verwendung von MP3 in der DB an, sonst knallt u.U. ein Rauschen in die Ohren, wenn der Player das Format überhaupt unterstützt, was das DLNA-Protokoll mit MP3 tut. Air-/Shareplay vormals Airtunes kann ich zwar vom iPhone aber nicht mehr vom Mac mit Airtunes zum X35 nutzen (abwärtsunkompatibel bzw. unvollständig umgesetzt?).Es gibt keine kinderleichte Bedienung oder nennenswerte Barrierefreiheit. Meine Tochter (drei Jahre) hatte auf dem Altsystem vorher keine Probleme mit Einschalten, Eingangsauswahl, Lautstärke regeln, CD einlegen und abspielen, jetzt schon.Bei Gerätekauf ohne Datenträger entschied ich mich im Preissegment von ca. 200 Euro zum Einbau einer leisen WD Purple 6 TB statt einer 0,5 TB SSD. Die wäre nach nun drei Monaten mit Hin- und Wieder-Recording voll, ohne auch nur eine eingelesene CD in der DB zu haben. Eine interessante Alternative wäre eine hybride (mir zu kleine und sicherlich lautere) 3,5" Seagate mit 2 TB, näheres bei Wiki. Ich gehe davon aus, dass es keine Probleme geben sollte, wenn es eine Hybride (ohne notwendige Treiber) mit Sata-Verbindung ist.

Das Gerät erfüllt alle Erwartungen. 5 Sterne.Die AndroidApp Novatron Music X lässt nur Zugriff bei "Kaltstart", also nach Ein und Ausschalten über rückseitigen Kippschalter.Ansonsten findet sie den X35 nicht. 0 Sterne. Ergibt in Summe 5.Nachtrag : App läuft jetzt.

Ich habe den X35 seit 10 Tagen und durchwandere derzeit ein Wechselbad der Gefühle.Zuerst das Positive: Beim ersten Abspielen einer CD klingt der X35 wirklich ausgesprochen gut. Auch die Anbindung an des Heim-Netzwerk erfolgt wie bei einem Smart-TV entweder über HiFi oder Netzkabel (technische Grundkenntnisse sind erforderlich), die Zugriffe auf die Internetdienste wie Free-DB und Internetradio funktionieren auf Anhieb. Der Selbsteinbau einer 3,5"-Platte verläuft problemlos, die Platte ist nach dem Formatieren verfügbar. Zum Rippen wird FLAC empfohlen, kann man im Setup auswählen, soweit sogut.Dann das große Aha Erlebnis. Die gerippten CDs werden hidden abgelegt, man kann keine Ordnerstruktuer wie am PC anlegen. Es gibt auch keine Sortierkriterien für den Interpreten oder das Album, alles wird flat in die Musik-DB eingepflegt. Ab der 50igsten CD verliert man jede Übersicht. Die TAGs werden generell aus der Free-DB vorbelegt, man kann sie auch mit Ausnahme des Genre überschreiben, Interpret und Genre werden aber titelweise (oft unterschiedlich innerhalb einer CD) vergeben. Man hat somit keine Kontrolle mehr über die Organisation der einzelnen Alben als Ganzes auf der Festplatte, die Sortierkriterien über Interpret, Komponist, Genre sind eindeutig zuwenig. Ein Ändern der TAGs kann mühsam mit der Fernsteuerung erfolgen, titelweise wie gesagt, es empfiehlt sich eine externe USB Tastatur. Dann die nächste Erkenntnis, viele Funktionen findet man nicht im Menü am Gerät und sind somit nicht über die Tastatur anwählbar, sondern verstecken sich in der Fernbedienung, man wechselt also ständig zwischen Drehknopf am Gerät, Fernbedienung und Tastatur hin und her. Wer glaubt, über das Webinterface besser klarzukommen, wird auch hier rasch entnervt. Dieses hat als Beta Version noch jede Menge Bugs, bietet ebenso keinen Komfort für die Sortierung von Interpreten. Viel Spass wenn man 3000 CDs hat und dann 1 davon sucht und diese dann unter verschiedenen Interpretennamen oder Genres abgelegt wurde. Man kann das Abspielen eines Titels über das Webinterface anstoßen, aber leider nicht mehr stoppen, man muß zum Gerät um es vorzeitig zu beenden ...Fazit: Die Musik-DB taugt aktuell überhaupt nicht für große Musiksammlungen, insofern kann man auch auf das Rippen am Gerät und die Festplatte verzichten. Problemlos funktionert eine externe Festplatte, man sieht wie am PC die Ordnerstruktur und kann problemlos seine vorher am PC gerippten MP3 oder M4a abspielen. Und diese klingen auch sehr gut.

Ich habe das Gerät nun seit fast 2 Wochen. Verarbeitung, Anschluss, Features, Klang - alles sehr gut. Ich verwende den X35 als Vorstufe, da ich bereits eine Endstufe habe. Auch das Abrufen der Mediendaten funktioniert bis auf ein paar Ausnahmen hervorragend - inklusive Cover. Ich verwende allerdings nicht die FreeDB sondern Gracenote (Lizenz ist beim Gerät dabei). Ein paar Dinge gibt es leider die verbesserungswürdig sind:-Wird eine CD grippt, ist das Bedienfeld des X35 blockiert. Lediglich über die App/Website ist das dann möglich.-Der Prozessor ist etwas unterdimensioniert. Mir ist es schon öfters passiert, dass bei Aufruf der Website während des Rippens, einige Menüs nicht erschienen bzw. ewig gebraucht haben.-Die Sortierung der Titel kann verbessert werden. Ich würde mir eine reine Interpretenliste wünschen.Die kleinen Makel geben eine Punkt Abzug. Ansonsten Kaufempfehlung.

An sich ist diese eierlegende Wollmilchsau ja wirklich den Preis mehr als wert, keine Frage. All die vielen Funktionen sind schon beeindruckend, aber leider wurde kaum eine dieser vielen Funktionen vernünftig zu Ende entwickelt.Die Bedienung ist nicht intuitiv, viele Funktionen liegen irgendwo tief in den Menüs versteckt und wenn man Musik hört sucht man manchmal ewig nach einer wichtigen Einstellung. Mir fehlt zwar der Vergleich zu anderen Wettbewerbern, aber wenn schon der Start des Gerätes ca. 1 Minute dauert bis Radio oder Musik gehört werden kann ist dies schon etwas blöd.Aber auch sonst ist die Anleitung zwar dick aber nicht wirklich hilfreich und nachvollziehbar. Und dann fehlen auch vielen Informationen, welche auch der Admin im Forum gar nicht weiß, z.B. nur mit eingebauter Festplatte funktioniert (auch beim Radio) das Weiterhören von Musik oder Radio beim Wiedereinschalten des Gerätes. Warum das ohne eingebaute Festplatte (auch beim Radio?!?) nicht geht? Keine Ahnung. Im Forum hingegen wird empfohlen das Gerät zwecks Hardwarereparatur einzuschicken statt zu erwähnen, man solle einfach mal eine Festplatte einbauen...Naja, vieles ist auch wirklich nicht schön, wie z.B. der Klang der Endstufe, dass der Equalizer ganz merkwürdige Scheitelfrequenzen hat welche Raummoden im Bassbereich nicht abdämpfen können, da die erste Scheitelfrequenz bei 64Hz einsetzt (ist mehr was für kompakte BoomBoxen), die Endstufe mit viel Klirr und eine mäßige Dämpfung (bei großhubigen Lautsprechern sehr wichtig), die Musikbibliothek ein Studium braucht, die Netzwerkeinstellung schön kompliziert sind, die App MusicXNeo zwar besser als die vorige ist aber oft plötzlich nicht mehr auf dem Smartphone reaktiviert werden kann ach und so viel anderes, dass Musikhören einfach keinen Spass macht...und darum geht es doch eigentlich hauptsächlich, oder?
