Train: The Definitive Visual History Hardcover – September 15, 2014

A lovely picture book that is well laid out. I liked the little shadows under each train against the white page to add a sense of weight. I did this on the 10 inch tablet and the print was just big enough for these old eyes, so wouldn't recommend the digital version on anything smaller. The layout is retained from the print book so you can't pop out the pictures to full screen, but pinching and sliding works well enough.Many pages feature half a dozen or more trains with a little heading paragraph about the category and some information about each one. This is more of a picture book than a reference book on these pages which form most of the book. There are expanded sections about individual trains and lines that are quite interesting with a fair amount of text and lots of lovely pictures.This is a take your time book that does require lots of zooming on the digital version. Worth the time and effort for a pleasant experience.

This is a book for adults but our five-year-old grandson is obsessed by trains, and this is an amazingly comprehensive and visually beautiful book which he will enjoy for years. He never gets tired of having it read to him and the pictures are beautiful. From the Smithsonian Museum, this book should delight the enthusiast. I’m super glad I found it for him. He stopped opening gifts to “read” this book. Enough said.

DK is notorious for the high quality visual guide in several subjects - it means the main message is given by high quality printed images. This book isn't an exception: the images will talk the history by themselves - it is an Historical Visual Guide to trains!There are lots of color images and schematics including particular details that is the second best thing after to have the actual machines available for your explorations. There is a small section at the end of the book with a technical overview on tracks, brakes and engines.The texts complement cleverly the great images.Highly recommended if you are interested on trains.

I got this for a train lover in the family. Not only does it have great images, but very thorough information about trains from all over the world. My young nephew even seems to love it. A great gift for a train fan, or anyone curious to learn more.

My friends Caroline and Derrick are British and live in the south of England. Derrick is very enamored of trains. His whole attic was remodeled and it is one big model train extravaganza. He loved the book. By the way, Derrick is 87 and climbs the attic stairs daily to tend to and add to his villages, forests, railroad tracks, and forest models he makes, and adds new tracks, new trains, tunnels, etc. It is a wonder to behold.

I was impressed by the variety of rolling stock that was pictured in this book, not only locomotives, but also various cars. Additional explanations and a glossary at the end of the book was very informative.I found a couple of minor errors in the text but they were not significant and someone who understands the descriptions will be able to note these.

I first read this book from the local library when I was 12 and than got it as a gift from my grandpa but I lost it like 2 years ago and bought it againThis book taught me alot about how trains work and the different trains around the worldBut I did notice it skipped over or talked very little aboutsome countries that had a bunch of trains like South Africa & Mexico
