Pro-level bidirectional tool with Bluetooth — solid but pricey
The ThinkCar bidirectional scan tool is a major upgrade over basic OBD2 devices. Equipped with a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter, it offers wireless diagnostics—no cables cluttering your dashboard. Research shows the ThinkScan 689BT model supports OE-level full-system diagnostics, bidirectional active tests, ECU coding, and 34+ maintenance services, with free lifetime updates and no subscription fees. In my experience, setup was smooth—just pair the dongle to the Android-based tablet. The interface is responsive, and connecting vehicle modules (ABS, airbags, transmission, etc.) took only seconds. The build quality feels robust, suitable for shop or field use. For the price, it’s a bit of an investment, but if you’re a mobile technician, shop owner, or experienced DIYer, it delivers the depth and reliability of higher-end lab tools. Q&A: Q: Does this support bidirectional (active) tests and ECU coding like premium diagnostic tools? A: Yes, models like the ThinkScan 689BT support bidirectional control, including active tests (e.g., pump, injector, fan, window), plus ECU coding and 34+ maintenance resets—all at no extra cost. Q: Is the Bluetooth connection stable and easy to use? A: Very stable. The Bluetooth OBD2 dongle connects quickly, and diagnostics run smoothly—no wires to manage. Q: Are updates free and does it require a subscription? A: Yes, ThinkCar offers lifetime free updates, with no subscription fees. The tool keeps getting new car coverage and features

Worth every penny!!!
I absolutely love this thing. It has saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. I went to a car dealership to look at a car that I was very interested in. I asked the sales guy if the car had any issues. He said no. I asked if he had any check engine codes, he said no. I then drove to see the car, and did a full diagnostics report on it. It told me that the car had 2 start-ups since the last engine code clearing. I didn't tell him that. I proceeded to test drive it, and the check engine code came on. I asked him if he's ever seen it come on before, and he SWORE that it has never came on before. I told him I saw that he cleared the code, and I was not happy with his dishonesty. I obviously walked away and gave them a very negative review (and they contacted me asking me to remove it, etc.). However, this thing does so much more. It clones keys, it reprograms almost everything in your car, such as windows, helps you bleed brakes, and does many more things (many things I don't even know how to use). It also allows you to look up your diagnosis, do real-time charts and analysis and many premium stuff (without a subscription). In my opinion, this is a MUST HAVE for any "home mechanic".

⚠️ Hidden $128/Year Fee for FCA Vehicles — Not Disclosed Anywhere
⚠️ Hidden $128/Year Fee for FCA Vehicles — Not Disclosed Anywhere Review: I’m a full-time mobile mechanic and bought this scanner expecting it to handle professional diagnostics with no surprises. The tool itself works, but there is a major hidden cost that buyers need to be aware of. If you work on Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, or Alfa Romeo, this scanner requires access to FCA’s Secure Gateway (SGW). What ThinkCar does not disclose anywhere on the product page, the manual, or their SGW documentation is that there is an additional $128 per year fee required to unlock these functions. This fee is separate from the normal AutoAuth subscription that all FCA vehicles require. You will not know about the ThinkCar fee until after you plug the scanner into an FCA vehicle and attempt to run bi-directional controls or service functions. At that point the tool blocks you and asks for the yearly payment. So if you work on FCA vehicles, your actual cost becomes: $50/year (AutoAuth) +$128/year (ThinkCar’s own SGW unlock fee) Total: $178 per year, on top of the price of the scanner. This is not shown in the listing, not mentioned in their advertising, and not explained anywhere before purchase. No videos I watched mentioned it either. I only discovered the fee after buying the tool and trying to use it on a customer’s vehicle. The scanner may still work fine for people who never touch FCA brands, but if you do even occasional work on them, this is something you absolutely need to know before buying. Posting this to save someone else from being blindsided like I was.

So much power
Absolutely love this scanner does everything I need it to do. The Bluetooth vci is awesome, now I can use my scanner outside the car. For anyone who needs access to 18+ Jeep, Chrysler, Fiat, or Nissan vehicles don't spend the $126 in the scanner. Go to Autoauth.com, pay $60, and register your scanner. This works for all scanners not just Thinkcar.
