Is there a puzzle within the deck? (As the final picture would suggest?) And, if so, does it, in anyone's opinion, lower the aesthetic quality?

Yes. There is a built in puzzle. It in no way has anything to do with the actual cards. There was a prize for solving the puzzle. But Theory 11 doesn't honor anyone solving it. Save your money and buy somewhere else than Theory 11.
