desertcart.com: The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook Vol. 2: 9798886634242: Rosenthal, Victoria, Kwong, Erin: Books Review: Challenging Recipes! - The apple potatoes and the fish soup is amazing! I haven't tried any dishes from this that were bad. Difficulty level of the book is high, but most of the meals are worth it. If you've already purchased the first one, this second iteration is well worth your time. Review: Great recipes, but a little complex - The pros: Recipes look delicious, instructions are clear, and all of them have gorgeous photos showing what to expect (you’d be surprised how many cookbooks skimp on that). It also has a little narrative, like most themed cookbooks: this one being that it was written by a student of the Gourmand, a famous chef character from Skyrim. So it’ll have cool notes and stories from this student describing his adventures as he developed the recipes. The cons: A lot of the recipes aren’t as beginner friendly as the first cookbook. That’s fine with me, but you need to be aware that several will require certain tools like a food processor; extensive preparation or cook times; or more exotic ingredients than the average American will find at a grocery market. Duck breast, for example, is something I could only find either here on desertcart, at a butcher’s shop, or possibly in a random Asian market. What I’m trying to say is, PLEASE don’t buy this book and then start crying that the recipes are too complex.

Excellent cookbook, just not a Volume 2
First what I like. The book is very thorough and well written. The sheer number of recipes is astonishing and the variety is enough that you could probably live off just this book. The format is similar to the first volume, and the pictures are excellent. Why 4 stars? Because it’s not volume 2 as much as Rosenthal’s take on the original Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Cookbook. The ingredients are for the most-part authentic (ie. believable) to the world of Tamriel, but there could have been more attention given to this in my opinion; such as using natural tallow or olive oil over canola oil, or natural ingredients in general over synthetic ones. I really liked the first volume because it was entirely realistic to the world of Skyrim and felt like a real-world extension of the game. This book is similar in many ways, but seeing a recipe call for blue food coloring affects that level of realism which is what makes the Elder Scrolls unique from WoW or another fantasy genre. I also expected all of the recipes to be from the various elder scrolls games, as with the first volume. I didn’t really recognize any recipes in this volume. Being able to make the honey-nut-treat recipe from the the first volume is awesome because it’s actually in Skyrim, whether or not it tastes good. Lastly, the art seems to lack continuity across the book, and seems less detailed, than in the first with a wide variety of styles and artists contributing to the final volume. The recipe photos themselves include more modern dishware which the first volume went to great lengths to avoid, adding tremendously to the realism. Ultimately it’s a great book and it fits the description so I can’t critique it too hard. I just wouldn’t call it Volume 2 and will have fun amending the recipes to fit the style of the original.

Fun Recipes, Difficult Ingredients
I enjoy this cookbook. The recipes in it are easy to follow and the flavor text and "story" behind the book are fun and lore-friendly. My only complaint is that some of the ingredients are hard to find, especially in more rural areas. Also, be prepared to eat a lot of duck!

We absolutely love it.
We have tried dozens of the recipes from this book and they are all pretty tasty. I think the only negative I can say about it is that some of the recipes are under seasoned for our tastes.
