Product Description Time (The Revelator) follows up the Grammy nominated 1996 debut, 'Revival' and 1998's 'Hell Among The Yearlings' and is the first that she and long-time partner David Rawlings have produced by themselves. Gillian Welch served as associate producer on the 'O' Brother, Where Art Thou?' project and contributed to the soundtrack album which has sold over 2,000,000 worldwide; she also appeared with Rawlings at the historic Ryman Auditorium concert in Nashville where almost all the soundtrack cast appeared - Emmylou, Alison Krauss et al, they performed two songs from this album. Gillian's understated manner dances rings around her rosey album, she has an uncanny ability to present new ballads that float with a timeless quality that could have beenborn in the Appalachians two centuries ago. Gillian Welch will be appearing at the Nashville Beyond festival in December and will attract huge media interest. .co.uk The considerable promise carried forth on Gillian Welch's first two albums is thoroughly fulfilled on Time (The Revelator). Welch has traded the guidance of her previous producer, T-Bone Burnett, for the sympathetic studio skills of her longtime guitarist-harmony singer David Rawlings, who loosens the reins just enough to allow moments of spontaneity to sparkle within the duo's spare, eloquent playing. "Revelator" is an instant classic, perhaps the first great American folk song of the 21st century. "I Want to Sing That Rock and Roll" is three minutes of Louvins/Everlys-style bliss. "April the 14th, Part 1" haunts its historical context with an achingly melancholy melody. It all leads up to the epic 14-minute "I Dream a Highway", one of the finest closing tracks ever put on record. --Peter Blackstock

Highly recommended
Having only just discovered Gillian Welch this purchase was a bit of a gamble, however its a gamble that has really paid off. This CD is full of wonderful songs, beautifully sung. Welch's voice is honest and full of haunting depth. Accompanied by the amazingly skilled guitar work of her partner David Rawlings every track is filled with integrity and warmth. These dark ballads are never depressing but always intriguing. My favourite album of the year so far. Highly recommended.

Bought after reading how Ben Howard revered it. Rightly so. The opening and closing tracks are just sublime. It's a real gem, but needs a bit of patience, especially if the nashville/modern country sound isn't your home turf.

Elvis Presley Blues soars
A stark and simple country-folk album, it's melancholic (in general). Like all good Americana I've listened to, it's the small, personal themes and stories that makes this a stand out album - Gillian Welch is a lucid story-teller with a real 'front-porch' feel to her voice and use of guitar and banjo. This makes her appear twee, but she is far from that. She's mournful, melancholic and reflective (all three in many cases, including My First Lover and the eponymous title track). The absolute stand-out track for me is Elvis Presley Blues - as beautiful a tribute as is possible. Touching and soaring and emotional, it's a fabulous song.Just a country boy that combed his hairAnd put on a shirt his mother made and went on the airAnd he shook it like a chorus girlAnd he shook it like a Harlem QueenHe shook it like a midnight rambler, babyLike you never seen, like you never seen, never seenAll in all a great album, too stark and stripped down to get a five-star rating from me, but it's pretty damned close.

Revelation
This is the music I like. Who knows whether it's stream of consciousness, fiction or reality. It's in tune, it's accomplished and it has a vibe of its own. Excellent.

a revelation
Time (the revelator) is as fine a record as you could wish for. From the haunting and wonderful opening track, 'Revelator' to the closing epic 'I Dream a Highway' this is the kind of record that seeps slowly into your soul-you really can't get the tunes out of your head. The arrangements with, mostly two guitars, are so subtle and beautiful that you find new things to admire on each listen. This is old music made new-it really is country music as popular music-just like The Carter Family and other past greats. If you want genuine pure music get this one asap!
