Untouchables: Fourth Season 1 [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

Rats! Having bought the first 3 series of The Untouchables, I found that the 4th was still available only as Region 1 DVDs. But wait, I have a Sumvision 1080p Phoenix DVD Player, which is region free! So I was able to buy the two box sets of series 4 and enjoy the crisp, nicely restored pictures of Elliot Ness stories from the prohibition era. Terrific!

this dvd was bought as a present for my partner to complete his collection of "the untouchables" needless to say he is delighted with it !!

The black & white picture and sound quality on this 14-episode collection is good. The subtitles are in English only, there are no extras. The discs WILL NOT play on a Region 2 DVD player, so be prepared (all the above details also apply to the volume 2 release of this title). Having read some of the more critical reviews of this release on Amazon.com, I ordered my copy with some trepidation. Having now watched both volumes 1 & 2 of this fourth and final season (this review can stand for both) I cannot understand some of the more severe criticism levelled against it. Even though I did get a sense of the series 'winding down' in some of the episodes, the stories are still well written and directed at a good pace. There is an overall toning down of the violence, with less explosive gun battles and the like, but still very entertaining nonetheless. The bootleg booze and narcotic stories are still here, along with scams, a school for assassins, and an outbreak of bird flu! Familiar gangsters such as Frank Nitti, Jake Guzik & Bugs Moran also put in appearances, while Eliot Ness is joined in a couple of investigations by Police Lieutenant Aggie Stewart (played by Barbara Stanwyck). Other guest stars include Roy Thinnes (The Invaders), Dorothy Malone and Scott Brady. The usual reliable performances from the regular cast & guest stars all contribute to a solid conclusion to a classic crime series from the 1950s/60s. Well worth completing your collection I reckon!

The Fourth Season was full of action packed viewing. We enjoyed each episode because each story was different and the actors were fantastic. There were no problems at all with the DVD's and we will always order from Amazon because of this. There are no delays on delivery and the DVD's are always in perfect condition. If you are looking for action movies order the Untouchables you will not be disappointed.

CHESS GAME: Richard Conte is a blind bootlegger who is A VERY clever man. THE ECONOMIST: THE MOB has booze supply problems to raise the profits. THE PEA: small time waitor has hope of rising in the mob. BIRD IN HAND: bird flu has a cash delivery go bad. THE EDDIE O'GARA STORY~ FIRST RATE: Eddie O'Gara plays up TO Bug Moran who is in hiding to gain power in the underworld~ Mike Connors shines~~~ ELEGY: Ness strikes a deal with a dying mobster. COME AND KILL ME~ the only episode in four season written by a woman~ FIRST RATE: a mastermind is running a school for KILLERS one of the few episodes filmed off the studio lot~~ A FIST OF FIVE: LEE MARVIS is excellent as a HONEST cop tossed off the force who schemes with his brothers to kidnap a mob boss for cash~~~ Marvin is outstanding. THE FLOYD GIBBONS STORY~ a reporter is KILLED on the verge of a big story break. DOUBLECROSS: NESS starts his own supply and bootlegg booze supply in order to cripple the mobs top sellers. SEARCH FOR A DEAD MAN: BARBARA STANWYCK IS AGGIE STEWART who is the head of a MISSING PERSONS unit look for ED ASNER as a her assistant as they use dental and EARLY CSI techniques to label and name a body. this was an attempt for a SPIN OFF OF THIS SERIES BUT IT DID NOT GET PICKED UP THE NETWORKS the story ties in with Ness. GREAT SEASON FOUR AFTER WHAT?? 5 YEARS AT LAST GREAT SOUND AND NEW DIGITALIZED ALL THE WAY~ FIRST RATE AND WORTH THE WAIT AND LOTS OF GREAT EARLY STARS. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS.

Excellent sound and quality picture for viewers of this well written and acted classic drama.
