I don't understand. Says 400mg magnesium glycinate but yields 56mg of essential magnesium. Does this mean it is not 400mg but only 56mg?

Yes, the labeling is correct in that the product contains 400mg of Magnesium Glycinate bearing 56mg of elemental magnesium. It's important to note that Elemental Magnesium is NOT the same as Magnesium Glycinate which is elemental magnesium combined with the amino acid glycine. The glycine is utilized to enhance its, magnesium's, absorption and availability to the body. If elemental magnesium is taken by itself, without the above aid of glycine or other variants, its bioavailability is reportedly to be very low in addition to several other factors that may limit its absorption such as dose, dietary factors, and the amount of food eaten. Magnesium is considerably used for the body's immediate needs as it is not stored by the body (typically up to 24 hours), so the more elemental magnesium you take, the more you will excrete as the absorption rate will be relatively constant (it has been shown that elemental magnesium's minimum absorption is roughly 15%, meaning basically 85% of it, elemental magnesium, would predominantly go to waste). This is disingenuous, or, generally evasive, because, in actuality, as stated above, their product, which purportedly contains 400mg of elemental magnesium, is, instead, 400mg of Magnesium Glycinate, and, conveniently fails to mention the true amount of elemental magnesium contained in each serving (this lack of transparency may also circumvent FDA product labeling guidelines). However, unlike these companies, California Essentials is one of a few supplement brands that are upfront and transparent with their customers about the actual measurement / composition of their product line (3rd party tested for purity and potency).

Ordered a new bottle, received it onn4/4/23. This bottle has a strong acetone type odor! Has something changed? I'm afraid to take it!

I’ve used this magnesium for about 2 yrs and never experienced a bad odor upon opening the bottle. I suggest you return that bottle and order another one. Good luck

These have gone from white to yellow why?

I don't know what they've put into these pills that caused this, but I've never had any medication before which after a month or two became rancid, turned from white to brown, and had an awful smell while in the bottle. Note that there are 4 other reviews on this site in addition to mine that complain of a bad or "nail polish remover" odor with this manufacturer's product. Do you really want to put this in your stomach? I've taken various manufacturer's magnesium supplement products over the years, and never encountered this with any other company's product.
