Perfect, with Sony Handycam vision ccd-trv78e pal.
Why did you choose this product over others?: Worked perfectly with my Dad's Sony Handycam vision ccd-trv78e pal. Easy to move old Hi8 videos to pc. The included software works fine, the instructions help you set it up for that, also it includes settings for other video software like OBS. Just plug the av leads from the camera into the capture leads and plug into a USB port. Then set-up the software and have fun. Lovely seeing old videos from 2003.

Check the operating system compatibility
Didn’t work on windows 11, but i got it working on a windows 8 and windows xp laptop with an app called ‘virtual dub’. Once working, it’s amazing. Preserving so many old cassette videos :)

excellent device at reasonable price
Used this device to digitise footage from old analog video8 tapes. Worked perfectly and was easy. All you do is rewind the tape in the old video8 camcorder, connect the yellow and white leads (from the device), plug the other end into the USB on your computer - you are now good to go. On the computer open Quicktime player and prepare to soak up your data in real time. To do this select 'New Movie Recording' and in the window slide the volume up to max. Now press play on the camcorder, followed by hitting the record button in the Quicktime window. (make sure in the dropdown that the 'AV to USB' and 'USB MIC' options are ticked). All your data will transfer in real time which will take as long as the tape size. At the end of the transfer you will need to save to desktop (will take a few mins). Don't forget this last step using the menu bar in Quicktime. All done. All the data can now be imported into your video editing software. Highly recommended solution to a problem of having to digitise old tapes.

Doesnt do what it says on the tin!
Plug and play? I have no idea what your meant to plug it into to get it to play! It certainly isnt a Windows 10 laptop.Had to buy numerous extra cables as this only comes with female attachments and both my VHS player and camcorder only have female sockets so needed male plugs to get the unit to work. Installed the drivers from the disc supplied, plugged in the USB and attempted to transfer my videos. I either got sound and no video or video and no sound, bearing in mind when I got video the picture was in four quarter sections. Then the thing kept crashing. After reading the reviews, which I wish I had done before buying, I noticed lots of people had had the same issues. Also a few had mentioned downloading different drivers to get it to work, tried this and eventualy got it to work with OBS Studio. All in all very dissapointed with this product. Wouldnt recomend to anyone to buy unless you like grief in your life.

Works in Win 10 without additional drivers or software.
Wanted to preserve in digital form personal VHS tapes and some French film classics. Sadly, the former had badly degraded but results were nonetheless better than nothing on some but hopelessly unfit on others. These tapes were in such poor condition that debris on the heads of the DVR caused later copies to fail until lengthy, careful, cleaning took place. The latter, old French films such as Pagnol classics like La Gloire de Mon Pere and Jean de Florrette, although somewhat less sharp or defined than modern versions, retained all of their charm and character and will probably spur me on to invest in modern, enhanced DVD versions in the future, as finances permit. I used the capture function in tools of the now defunct Serif Movie Plus x6 to make .wmv versions of the files, later converted in VLC to .MP4. For the price, more than pleased.

Too good to be true? A work in progress.
This was my original 1 star review after using Ulead or Videostudio to capture. Essentially no audio and unable to save: "It seemed to install correctly, or at least device manager identified a USB digital and USB audio device in Windows 10, so hopes were high. I was able to capture video from a VHS-C camcorder, but unfortunately no audio was captured. Tried several different Windows 10 PC's to no avail. I then noticed that after I stopped the capture and tried to save the video only that had been captured, every text box that I opened to try and save the file was immediately filled with an infinite number of capital "C"'s . This also happened when the windows search box was opened, so clearly a hardware problem on the device. Returned the same day it arrived. I suspect that quality control is just too expensive to perform on such a cheap device. I hope some work properly as other reviews suggest, but I was unlucky enough to get a dud." However, after RTFM, and using OBS, both audio and video were captured. BUT, the audio has an exact echo of every sound, so still not right. I'll try again and hope that this "fool with a tool is still a fool", and finally get it to work properly!

Simple, easy to use ...inexpensive solution ...My beloved memories are now digital...I am delighted!
After spending many hours researching the best and most inexpensive way of transferring my beloved Sony camcorder tapes to digital I have finally got my treasured memories in a digital format. I have looked into many ways to do this over the last couple of years and was beginning to lose hope as it all looked very complicated or very expensive. The many you-tube videos on the subject left me feeling a bit overwhelmed! After several failed attempts to transfer my tapes I came across this device. I held out little hope that it would work but I thought for the price I would give it a try. I was amazed at how simple it was to transfer the recordings from my Sony camcorder to my computer and from there to memory sticks. I am now able to send my videos via e-mail and can view the films on my TV, laptop etc. You do need to download a programme I used OBS which was really easy to use. I cannot recommend this product highly enough. I am now embarrassing my grown-up children with the many hours of footage I have from family holidays etc (ha ha). The only thing I would say is that the sound quality is average but the picture quality is very good (don't expect HD from 30 year old camcorder tapes). A great product.
