Review: A TRIP ROUND MY CHILDHOOD - My family is Austrian/German so I was brought up in the UK surrounded by foodstuffs which we used in an unconventional way ie we used olive oil to cook with whereas British people put it in their ears when they wanted to unclog them! Such was the way with baking: no Victoria Sandwiches, Scones, Shortbread at our house - oh no! It was filled with Mohn Kuchen, Bienenstich and the like and this book has brought it all back to me, and more. I haven't been to Germany for many years for lots of reasons (mostly that Life got in the way) but this book transports you into a familiar world, full of 'different' ingredients and recipes which will go down a storm with friends, family and anyone else you bake for. When we have gatherings at work and the table is set with boring sandwiches and the British cakes mentioned above, I walk in with my German delights and guess which ones are the first to be wolfed down? It's like a swarm of locusts ....... If you have a European heritage like me and want to relive your youth through baking experiences, this is definitely the one and only German baking book I would recommend. If you are not European but a keen baker (the recipes are very easy and beautifully illustrated) and want to wow people, buy this book. You won't regret it. It's Wunderbar! Review: Great authentic food and lovely recipes - So far so good. I line German food and these recipes are great.

good enough... but not great
I would have enjoyed a more rounded context. This is like talking to your 'Oma', who has never left her village. She knows what she is talking about... but not what is unique about her kitchen. I like it but will need other books also. Great delivery Thank you to all.

Having searched for decades for the correct pastry for my late Oma's plum tarts and never finding anything quite right online, I finally have a book that will help me to decipher my late Oma's handwritten volume. Insanity has been averted at last! We tried out the plum tart and it was wonderful, as was the herring and cream salad that has been a family staple for breaking the Yom Kippur fast every year. The matriarchs in our family would never give away a whole recipe, so this book has gone a long way towards filling in the gaps. Thank you!

Good
Good book as a basis for German cooking. Recipes are very traditional and the book is well presented. Would like there to have been a few more recipes, but overall a good book.

I have tried a number recipes and love them. If I have got it wrong I can work it back to me not the recipes. Most items you can get but I haven't found smoked belly pork yet. I would recommend you get quality ingredients as the recipes don't benefit from cheap meat , well it's German so think quality quality!!

I bought this book years ago from a store. I've bookmarked all of the recipes in it that I love from my childhood and frankly, I have about 80% of the recipes bookmarked :p My sister-in-law always admired it as she loves German cooking. So this year, I got her this cookbook for her birthday and she was very happy with it :)
