Geology of Ireland: A Field Guide

I found this book extremely useful out and about in Ireland. Gives a succinct guide to the geology of a select number of locations without too much scientific information. Good for both qualified and armature geologists

This is a great book with a lot of information and detailed illustrations of locations and features. It is not really a beginners guide and assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of geology. I'm looking forward to going on some of the suggested field trips.

This has garnered great reviews from geologists here, and I won't dispute their analysis. However it is important to point out that it is not suitable for the enthusiastic beginner (or even the less enthusiastic beginner). Also, I had hope it would be a "field guide" in the sense of most field guides for birds, trees, insects etc i.e. a portable book that would help in identifying natural features. This however is really a set of itineraries of very specific field trips to specific parts of the country. I cannot fault this book's content for its target readership, but that target readership is a few steps ahead of my enthusiastic amateurism.
