Having had the wooden tracks and manual train movements, my 4 year old grandson loved this train. It works with or without tracks. The battery compartments have screws to prevent him from bumping it open. Looks durable, but the ultimate test will be in the coming months.

Exactly what you're looking for. My son has a lot of fun with it. It makes noise at a good level that isn't annoying if you're sensitive to annoying noises. The battery life is really long and I haven't changed them after 4 months of use. Very easy to use and the value is really great.

Got this for a five-year-old, they loved it and have played with it instantly. Perfect for on and off track

Works well on Brio track but was slightly too tall to go thru some of the Brio accessories such as tunnels and bridges.

My son loved the little kid wooden train sets - he would spend quite a while laying out complex paths for his trains then pushing the trains along on the “rails.” But as he got a bit older, the trains lost their luster to some degree - everything else was motorized or electronic in some manner and the old wooden trains didn’t seem as fun anymore. This locomotive brings the fun back to the wooden trains for my little one - now he can build those same layouts (or, actually, more complex ones since he’s older now) and use the remote control train to glide along them (it does also work on other smooth surfaces, not just the wooden railways - though it’s clearly meant for the railway. Just add batteries (not included, both the remote and the train need them) and off you go. The train can go forward or back with lights and sounds - controlled either from buttons on top of the locomotive OR the remote which is easy to use. The train connects to common magnetic coupling cars and can pull a few. It is decorated like a real locomotive, though it’s not the most detailed model, it fits in with the level of the wooden sets themeselves. I did remove one star for a combination of three reasons. First, if your set has a “bridge” or any elevation change, you’ll have to remove some cars as the train can’t pull as many cars up the bridge ramps as it can on flat ground. Second, be prepared with extra batteries - my kiddo trained the AA batteries in the locomotive itself in less than a day. Third, and perhaps the biggest cause to drop the star is that the remote doesn’t always communicate with the train after a time or when you first turn it on. You often have to get the train going with on of the buttons on the back and then it will respond to the remote. Otherwise, this is a nice way to add additional interactivity and a new dimension to the wooden sets you likely already have! Highly recommend with the caveats noted above.
