Proxxon precision drill press
This Proxxon precision drilling press is beautifully made and robust. It has all the adjustments one could require and should last a very long time. Considering it had to ship from Germany,it arrived very quickly.

Perfect tool
Perfect tool for Proxxon series drills and grinders with a straight 20mm neck. Precise, wobble-free, suitable for precision small work. I am satisfied with this tool.

Perfect for small work
This is a very well made tool. I use it for drilling printed circuit board, which was difficult on my larger drill. The matching vice would be a good item to have and I will purchase later. I Would recommend for small engineering and electronic construction work.

Solid, rigid and versatile....but needs tweaking to make it better!
I’m using this with an FBS 240/E. It’s made of metal....mainly alloys except for the main vertical shaft which is steel. It’s solidly made and although it didn’t seem rigid to start with, once the various adjusters were set, it was pretty good. The fit to the 20mm drill collar is very tight...but eases a bit in use. When using as a drill press, the drill moves smoothly and without sideways flex. So all in all, it’s good and I’m happy that I bought it....miles better than other well know competitors that seem to be pretty plastic. Oh, and drills can be changed without removing the drill itself as the shaft locking button can still be accessed. But there are some aspects that just are not right as it arrives. I can only assume that no one at Proxxon etc has tried using it! Here are the tweaks that I made: 1. The clamping handle that locks the drill in the collar sticks out too far for me. The result is that when the windlass handle is operated you can catch your hand on the clamping handle. It would have been easy for Proxxon to have put this on the other side but that isn’t possible now because of the way the collar is threaded. So what I did was to cut the clamping handle to about half it’s length, drill a hole for the actuating bar and hey presto, there’s enough room. A fairly easy fix. 2. The arm of the windlass handle itself is not in the best place because you can’t get full travel of the drill without it getting very awkward. If you imagine looking at the arm sideways on, it comes factory supplied at about ‘10 to 12’. The best position for me seems to be about 90 degrees back from that ...ie about 5 or 10 past 12. It wasn’t difficult to drill a 3mm hole in the right place and thread it using an M4 0.7 tap. The bar can then be repositioned and it’s much much better. 3. The vertical play adjustments need setting...mine were loose...but it was easy and once done, no lateral play. What is stupid though is that the lock nut is 5.5mm. Well maybe you’ve got a 5.5mm spanner but my smallest is 6mm...which is too large. Why can’t Proxxon either use a 6mm nut or provide a 5.5mm spanner...which I’ve just has to order. 4. The rotary clamps were not greased..they needed cleaning of paint and lubricating...now OK. 5. The baseplate fence moves pretty roughly....but if you take it off and sand the alloy edges down the sides and underside of the slot it’s better although still a bit lumpy. 6. Although it’s a relatively small stand, when raising or lowering the whole assembly on the vertical shaft, it’s still a bit awkward and surprisingly heavy. The thing is that to adjust height, a clamp needs to be released on the rear shaft with one hand whilst still holding the drill in its assembly with the other...and it all wobbles a bit...there’s nothing stopping the assembly dropping and potentially doing some damage if there’s a bit in the chuck. So, a touch of genius....I happen to have a couple of springs that came from an old plunge router. Each spring is about 70/80mm long and they’re just the right diameter to fit loosely onto the shaft under the drill assembly. So now when the rear clamp is released, these springs take the total weight of the drill head which now has to be gently pressed down against the spring pressure rather than simply dropping under gravity. It makes an amazing difference and turns the drill stand into a much more professional tool and more like a full size pillar drill. It’s a tweak well worth doing if you can get suitable springs. With all these tweaks in place and the various threads oiled/greased, I’m very pleased with what the drill stand has become. With the tweaks, I’d happily give the stand 5* ...maybe Proxxon should take note as the cost would be minimal and they’d have a far superior product...as far as I can see, much better than any of their competitors. Hope these ideas help! PS... if anyone wants photos, let me know...maybe ask a question or leave a comment

An obviously returned product
This drill stand arrived with a torn and creased box, the internal cardboard was also ripped, presumably when the original recipient unboxed this item. The drill stand head would only travel downward for about 2cm at which point it became stuck and the handle which is used to move the the drill head up and down had a fracture in the thread that attaches it to the pivot, I guess this happened as a result of the previous owner attempting to force the drill to move beyond the point where it became stuck. To avoid the hassle of returning the item I decided to disassemble the drill stand to see what the problem was. The drill head is manufactured in cast aluminium and the dovetailed slot that allows the drill head to travel up and down was incorrectly machined and this was causing the rack and pinion mechanism to jam up on the lower lip of the slot. After I filed down the lower lip of the slot to the correct height, I reassembled the drill and made a replacement handle from a bolt and a piece of wooden dowel. The drill head now travels smoothly from top to bottom of the slot as it is designed to do and after adjusting the grub screws, as the instruction manual explains, I found the the drill stand to be very precise with next to no head wobble when I tested it using my Proxxon IBS/E. I am surprised that the drill stand was able to get past the Proxxon quality control in such a state but from previous experience I was not altogether surprised by the Amazon returns department who appear to be happy to resell obviously used and faulty items. I guess that if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. I have several other bits of Proxxon stuff and I have been happy with the quality of all of them however unless you are prepared to do some re-engineering I should avoid this particular item, at least when sourced from Amazon anyway.
