Is the size the length of the belt i.e. 85cm

85cm is the length from the metal pointy thing you stick in one of the holes of your belt, to the 3rd hole of the 5 pre punched holes.

Hubby wears 33" jean. What size belt would i need please

I would probably go with the 90 or 95 for that. 33" is just under the 85 but it might be a bit close if his jeans have stretched at all and he's actually a little larger than 33".

How do you know what size waist it fits

I can't find the exact rule that correlates real length with size. I am wearing a W34 Levis 501 and I am using the nominal size 95. The leather part of Size 95 has a length of 110 cm. In fact, 95 cm is the length between the metal end and the middle point of the two "inner" holes (those closer to the buckle). A general rule is the one suggested on the product's page. For Size 95, the Size Map mentions 36. I assume this is related to the Waist size of Levis Bottoms. It's true that even if I wore a W36 Levis, I could use the belt. However, the available part of the belt between the locking point and the free end, in that case, would have been 15 cm. I prefer the belt to be a bit longer, so, for me, the available part is 20 cm (15 cm mentioned previously, plus 2 more inches, as I wear W34 and not W36). So keep that in mind and either use the Map Size or add two more inches as I did (especially if your waist circumference changes from time to time). I hope I have not confused you!
