I considered various models and certainly could have gone cheaper but I like the Chamberlain Premium model because of key charac
I had a Wickes brand chain door opener (really was a Chamberlain) which had done more than 20 years sterling service but it finally failed and although I could get the nylon drive cog parts (parts for all makes of door openers are readily available from Easygates) I decided it was time for a new model and new remote controls etc. My garage door is a double up and over type but of the older and heavy vintage but reasonably balanced by side springs. I considered various models and certainly could have gone cheaper but I like the Chamberlain Premium model because of key characteristics: 1. It has plenty of torgue 2. being belt driven it is very quiet 3.required no additional extras as much of the fittings were similar to my previous 4. good reviews 5. fitting/setup was claimed to be very simple which I can now confrim. Arrived quickly (thanks Amazon and price better than Easygates) at about 2pm; decided to get to work immediately and the construction of the shaft means that you can build it and be ready to fit in just a few minutes. The long shaft comes ready for assembly by merely sliding joining pieces over the sections so it is rigid; The belt is then readily tensioned as per manual. I remember my old Wickes chain one took hours of bolting sections and installing a very greasy chain. For me the door fitting was identical so just a matter of changing bolts; the ceiling joist supports of old were not in right place but a little angle iron provided and a few nuts and bolts and it was up hanging from the ceiling joists. Not as heavy as old model by at least 50%. I had no wiring as an existing electric socket was in reach. Adjusting opening and closing positions is a piece of cake! It learns the settings. Registering the key fobs was trivial - you can have button for up and one for down but I decided just to register any press per fob to open/stop/close depending on last action. i.e. same as Wickes and no danger in dark of pressing wrong command. The door opening is now close to silent and absolutely no vibration at all in bedroom above unlike the Wickes chain drive which could be heard/felt throughout the house. Advice: belt drives are essential if children sleeping above as the chains seem to be much more noisy. Only installation advice I would give is make sure clearance between shaft and door is generously greater than the minimum in the instructions as the shaft does flex a little as door is mid opening. probably would even more on a windy day. Door motor has a two speed process presumably checking for obstructions more cautiously at beginning and end. Slightest physical obstacle to the door opening and it reverses. Does have option of proximity detectors and other accessories perhaps useful if children might be in the area. The LED light (timed for about 2 mins) is great; not as bright as the options in the Wickes where you screwed in a bulb to a bayonet fitting on the opener itself but plenty for getting to and from car on a dark night and being LED very long life. Installation time including decommissioning old and preparing it for scrap man; installation and adjustment of opening and setting for fobs was less than 2 hrs but did not need to do any wiring; I did it on my own but a job more safely done by two for the part when you put the motor in the ceiling to the roof suspension brackets (a little rope from the brackets to the motor unit can hold it up whilst the nuts and bolts are fitted if alone). Two months on and I am delighted that I can go in and out at night time and no one can hear the door from the house or bedroom above. Worth the slight premium price for the certainty of the generous torque and overall quality. To me it seemed excellent value compared to competition or alternative models. Hope this one give me twenty years!

Good replacement
My 17 year old chain Liftmaster 800 stopped working and I thought it better to replace rather than attempt a repair. I decided on the premium model as I thought the extra torque would be beneficial as I was using the the previous rail header and door brackets which were off centre due to a centrally mounted fluorescent light fitting. Also good for longevity. My garage is under a bedroom and is under drawn so the first job was to locate the joists as it was obvious that the mountings would not coincide with a convenient joist. I bolted two heavy battens between two joists so as to provide a suitable hanging bracket location. As I was doing this installation by myself I screwed in a M10 hook in to a joist along the line of the rail so as to be able to suspend and adjust the level of the rail and therefore better able to measure and fix the hanging brackets. The assembly of the rail and the installation was easy following my preparations. The very short power cord was just long enough to reach the previously used socket. I did have a problem on commissioning the door opener. The trolley would not engage with the belt mounted trolley carrier, somehow the belt mounted carrier had got into an unusual position (probably my error). A very helpful telcon with tech service soon sorted that out. As mentioned in previous reviews the installation instructions could be better written but it is possible to figure them out. The Chamberlain's video is very helpful if a bit simplistic. The link to the video is on the Amazon site for the "comfort" model. It is possible to mount the hanging brackets at the motor end of the rail in two positions. (1) as shown in the video and in the instructions and (2) as shown just in the instructions. ie hanging brackets attached directly to the motor unit or attached to the split bracket on the rail forward of the motor unit. This last method may make life easier as it will be possible to line up the hanging brackets to a joist. However this seems a bit flimsy to me. I decided to attach the hanging brackets to the motor unit then used the split brackets with the hanging brackets off my old unit and fitted these about half way along the rail, thus stiffening up the assembly. The job from start to finish took about five hours, mainly due to sourcing and fitting suitable aforementioned battens and hook. It is disappointing that the supplied remote fobs (batteries already installed) are of the key ring type, it would have been nice to have one of them on a visor clip. I did try to pair my old remotes to this new unit following the instructions but no success. The supplied remotes and the wall mounted wireless controller are pre programed. Overall I am very happy with this American/German/Chinese? product. Seemingly good quality and reasonably priced versus similar specced rivals. What tipped it for me was the delivery time, following day! Also someone to call in the event advice is required.

I'll be back with the 5th star in 2035!
I'm deliberately holding back on the 5th star, on the grounds that the unit I've just replaced has given around 20 years good service. I'll be back with the 5th star in 2035! OK, I'm being deliberately fecitious, but in truth, for an item like this, longevity and reliability are both pretty crucial features if it's functionality, to say nothing of a measure of it's quality, so I'll reserve at least some judgement. Anyhow, great product so far. After I'd wrestled the old unit down from the ceiling, fitting this one took about 1.5 hours. Straightforward enough with a little planning. The unit does seem well made, the rail assembly being pretty bomb proof. It's considerably lighter than the old Chamberlain unit it replaced and certainly looks nicer - the drive belt, etc being all but hidden from view and the motor unit far more imaginative than a plain metal box. The really noticeable differences come on startup: soooo quiet! I daren't use the old one much after about 10pm because it would wake everyone in the house up. This one is barely audible outside of the garage itself. The slowing down at the start and end of cycles is a nice touch, as, if nothing else, it gives you more time to exit if you use the wall mounted switch. The safety sensing is clearly far more advanced than the old unit too: I placed a piece of the polystyrene packaging in its path, which was barely dented, based on the resistance needed to stop the old unit, I was expecting obliteration. All in all, so far at least, I'm a very happy camper! See you in 20 years.
