Rubio is the best, versatile finish
I’ll always be a Rubio fan. It’s easy to apply, forgiving, and durable. While it’s expensive, it goes a long way due to the single application. I do like using a scraper for this but have also used towels and rags to apply it, which works well too. Over time, the cap to Part B can get sticky, so I’d recommend cleaning the threads on that after each use.

Go to finish
I’ve been using Rubio Monocoat regularly, and it has quickly become one of my go-to finishes. It’s easy to apply, dries quickly, and the walnut color gives wood a beautiful, natural look that really enhances the grain. The finish is durable and holds up well over time, which makes it great for both small projects and larger pieces. I also appreciate that it’s eco-friendly compared to traditional stains. A bit more expensive than some options, but the quality and results are worth it.

Works well
It works really well. The application is easy, and the finish dries to a smooth, natural-looking surface. I love how the wood grain pops without looking overly glossy. The smell is mild compared to other finishes, and the coverage is excellent. It gives my table a clean and professional look.

WAY better than Polyurethane and No Fumes
I’m a novice woodworker at best, working out of an attached garage that doubles as my shop. Anytime I used stain or oil-based polyurethane, my family would immediately start complaining—the fumes always found their way into the house. This time, I decided to try Rubio Monocoat for the first time on a 9-foot desk I built for my office. I applied two coats, and let me tell you—virtually no smell. Maybe a light scent in the immediate area, but it was more like carnauba wax than chemicals. Most importantly, no complaints from the family. Application was super simple. I just used my DeWalt orbital sander to buff it into the surface, and it turned out great. I love how you can still feel the wood grain—that’s something you just don’t get with polyurethane, which basically covers your project in plastic. The look was amazing too. I went with "Pure," and it did not disappoint. The finish came out pretty natural but with a slightly wet look. See for yourself. The only real downside? The wait. You’ve got to let it cure for about a week before using the piece, and that was easily the hardest part. If I have any issues with this finish I'll come back to report but so far it's been a few weeks and I LOVE it.

Excellent Product, with a minor caveat...
Excellent finish. Food safe and fairly durable. Easy to apply and buff. I left the countertop un-touched for 1 week. Liquid beads right up. No grain raising. I used it on a teak butcher block style countertop. The "pure" brought out the color I was looking for. Only 2 complaints (hence the 4 stars), one was the instructions were way too small. Had to use my phone as a magnifier...ugh. A link to a PDF would fix that. The other was that no whee in the instructions does it say not to pour the part B into the part A can. Here in the states, its customary to always mix 2 part mixes in the larger can. DON'T DO IT! So that was an issue. I was able to salvage enough for my project. It reminds me of what we called "hardening oil" back in the day ('60s) that we would mix up. Not food safe chemicals though...lol Other than those two minor issues, I'll be using this from now on as needed. Highly recommend. Remember, this is a "treatment" to protect the wood from liquid and stains. It is NOT a "finish" (like a poly) that puts a protective layer on top of the wood.

The best thing you can get for butcherblock counters
Just coming back on here to say I’m still so impressed with durability and appearance of the finish. Two years in and my heavily used oak butcherblock island still looks fantastic. When I say heavily used, I really mean it - it gets out through the rigors of running a professional cake design business and a family kitchen where every meal is made from scratch. Sourdough, food coloring, dirt covered vegetables from the garden, jam making, pizza dough - the lot. Absolutely brilliant product. We've done several kitchen remodels in the past and have always used IKEA's Behandla on our butcherblock countertops. Sadly that product has been discontinued and its replacement, Stockaryd, is not the same thing at all. It is just Tung oil, which sinks into the wood but provides no barrier whatsoever - the second you use even just a damp cloth on it, the wood grain rises up and becomes rough again. With Behandla I could empty a bottle of food coloring on my butcherblock and it would wipe right off, leaving no stains at all! So disappointed. Next I tried a butchblock conditioning cream which added beeswax into the finish, supposedly for enhanced water resistance and durability. That was a fail too, so then I added a layer of the same company's Wax It All, hoping that the extra wax would be deal clincher. I didn't wash it for a week, and the first time I took a damp cloth to it, not only did the grain rise up immediately but it left a huge white patch in the finish. There wasn't even any cleaner on the cloth, just water. In desperation I searched the web for a better solution and came across Rubio Monocoat. As a cake decorator who works from home, I need a product that has food safety certification, but I didn't want to use a polyurethane because of the risk of flaking and the lack of ability to do spot repairs, not to mention the horrible chemicals. Rubio Monocoat sounded almost too good to be true but after reading lots of reviews and educating myself on their website about how it actually works, I was ready to give it a go. The biggest part of the job for me was prepping the countertops, as I had to sand them right back down to bare wood. If you have new, untreated butcherblock, you will breeze through this process! The packaging truly sucks (how are you meant to separate the two tins?!) and the instructions are printed so small that I couldn't read them even with glasses on! However the website is very informative and tells you everything you need to know. As promised, the butcherblock was touch-dry at the end of the buffing process and the smell from the linseed oil was very minor and not unpleasant - no VOCs!. The next day we started to put plates etc on the counter but did no food prep or anything that would require cleaning on it, as you have to keep it dry for five days in order for the oil to cure. At the end of five days, I cleaned it down with a damp cloth and was thrilled that it stayed smooth as glass. I put it to the ultimate test, slapping dough on to it and making pizza last night, and it came through with flying colors. Scraped up the excess dough, washed it down, and the countertop is still good as new. Thank God - have finally found a replacement for Behandla! Don't waste your time on oils - they might work for a butcherblock chopping board or a wooden salad bowl, but they don't work for a countertop that needs cleaning daily. This product is natural, food safe and actually does what it says on the tin! Their customer service is also very good. They have a chat on the website which is actually a human being and not a bot. They answered a couple of questions I had and were very honest, clarifying which of their maintenance products had food safety certification and which didn't - it would have been very easy for them to just say they all did, but they were very specific, which I really appreciated. All in all, five stars!

If you are a Blacktail Studio follower, you know what you are buying. This stuff produces extremely hard-wearing protection layers on hardwoods. My home's stairs - after three years of hard, daily use - still look beautiful. The trick of the trade is to use TINY amount of it and work it well using a soft sponge pad (open or closed pores) on RO. Meticulous prep (sanding, water pop, blowing the dust, etc) is a key to achieve fantastic results.
