True love never ends. A hearbreaking but lovely story.
After seeing the film several times over the years, I decided to purchase and to read the book version. It's good to have the book as well as seeing the film as you can compare the two which are excellent in their own right (some prefer the film, some prefer the book, some like the two equally, everyone's different).A little spoiler:It's a heartbreaking but lovely story of: time travel, love, romance, never giving up on wanting to be with the one you love; your soulmate, and desiring to be with them come what may. Without giving the plot and storyline away too much so as not to spoil it for others, what I will say is that if you want to read a book that gives you a glimpse into just how far people are prepared to go to be with another person - despite going through anguish and despair to get there - it will move your heart and soul, this story, and you'll come away feeling that love truly does triumph over any obstacle put in its path. The book was packaged very well, arrived before the 'due date' and there's nothing nicer than opening the packaging and holding a brand-new book in your hands, written by a gifted and wonderful author - Richard Matheson, who takes you on a wonderful heartwarming emotional journey with you not being able to put the book down, it's that good.I highly-recommend Somewhere in Time to any reader who enjoys romantic time-travel stories, with drama and suspense included too.

Beautiful poignant story
Lovely book. I like many saw & fell in love with the film first. I love both book & film equally. The 1st 20 pages are the only problem with the book as they do not flow well, once past them - I was hooked. Richard matheson wrote both the book AND film and it is interesting to see how he changed the original story slightly for the film. The book like the film conveys completely the feeling that Richard collier felt utterly compelled to go back in time & meet elise, & the sweet gentle loving character of richard is plain to see - & having read facts about the film - this was why Christopher reeve was chosen to play Richard. As in the film - beautiful music plays a key part - in the book it is mahler, in the film it is rhapsody on a theme by paganini. The writer draws you into Richards plight so well & the time travel aspect is fascinating. The writer's love for the genteel late victoriana era and poignant classisal music is a key element. What is so poignant - is that both Richard & elise love each other deeply - although they have not been together long, yet they are denied their happiness ultimately. A beautiful, touching story - that will always have a place in my heart

3.9 stars.
Actually, my rating for this book is 3.9 stars. It does take a LONG time to get going (the first 100+ pages are actually verging on boring), but once it does, it will not let you go. I agree with one of the other reviewers, the ending is rushed - it seems like Richard Matheson suddenly realised that he had to end the story somehow. Oddly enough, the movie's ending, which is pretty much the same, does not feel rushed at all. Weird. Also, (again, I'm agreeing with another reviewer), I don't see why Richard had to be dying from a brain tumor. It did nothing whatsoever for the story (except at the very end, when it was used to potentially explain everything that happened in the story).Anyway, the story is great, really great, but I can't give it 5 stars because it takes so long to get going. I would recommend it, definitely

Pulls at the Heart Strings
I have to confess that time travel is one of my weaknesses. I just love the imaginative feelings this type of book or film gives me. 'Somewhere in Time' definitely is one of my favourites, both book and film. Ahhh! Back to business though... I did enjoy this book and after a slightly slow start it fascinated me. I don't like spoilers in reviews so will not give in to the temptation to reveal too many details. Sufficient to say the illness that is part of the plot might depress some readers. It is however for me a beautiful novel. It deals with time travel and romance with one human being searching for love. The longing to be with someone you love deeply and the heartache that can be incurred on the journey is central to the story and is accepted by the main character as unavoidable in his journey towards his dream. It is often said that true love overcomes all obstacles to eventually triumph. That belief is quite complex though in real life. It certainly does not mean that everyone achieves the goal of being together with the one who is loved - enough said. If you are romantic at heart however and enjoy time travel books don't miss this utterly poignant but delightful story, both film and book version.

Book not up to film standards.
The book is not as good as the film, by any means. A bit slow, and ponderous, whereas the film adaption is wonderful! Usually, this is not the case, the book is usually better by far.

read in one sitting on a boiling hot summers day
I would never have read this book if it was not for a review on Paul Magrs' blog. I was enchanted by the story and the different questions it raised in me as a reader. The story is well constructed and poignant and much better I think than the film, which I watched the next day. I felt the story slowed just a little in the middle, but I loved it all the same. It felt quite profound to be reading it so soon after the death of Richard Matheson as I read that this was in his opinion one of the best books he had written. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Purchased for a friend
I read this book many years ago and really enjoyed it. The film was amazing with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. A real romantic tear jerker . My friend also loved the film so I got her the book as I know she will love it !
