Some people put their cast iron pans in the dishwasher. Some buy $5 pocket flashlights and complain they aren’t bright enough. Then there are the guys who buy a $12 carbon steel knife and bellyache because it rusts when put away wet. The issue is called PEBIAC — “problem exists between item and chair.” Carbon steel knives demand maintenance. They are not stainless steel. But they are amazing blades for the person who knows what they are buying (metal that easily rusts), knows how to care for the blade (force patina and routine oiling), and employ the appropriate use for a 3.6” blade with partial tang (the people using this knife to baton are inviting breakage). This Mora 511 is a very well made knife and fantastic for a variety of camp uses, including food prep, whittling, cutting fire starter branches, rope work, and more. But, it’s not a hard core bush crafting blade. Folks who want to split logs with this knife need to think twice (and rethink their budget!). Moras speak for themselves in simplicity, quality, and value. It’s not a cheap, poorly made, product punched out in distant lands with $2 hr workers. You can do a lot with it…for…just…12 bucks. But when you start comparing it to a $200 knife with a 5-6 inch blade and full tang construction…well, you are fooling yourself and looking silly. Carbon steel knives are legendary for their durability and edge, not just with outdoorsmen, but professional chefs as well. They are great knives for people who know how to care for them. If you leave your knives out in the rain, or put them in your tackle box wet, or want to leave them in the sink over night…buy stainless steel. Not carbon. But if you desire a quality blade at a good price and enjoy the “liturgy” of caring for your tools, this Mora is a fun little knife. Every collector should have a Mora or two. Do some research on carbon steel before you buy. The molded handle feels nice in the hand because of its good size, fit, and finish. The blade is sharp to start with and can get plenty edgier with a decent stone. Take the time to force patina it, and you will save yourself some grief. And whatever you do, dry it when it gets wet and rub some oil on it from time to time. I really like this multi-use, good looking, all-you-need knife for hiking, camping, and workbench needs. I give it an all-around 4 star rating. But if you strictly compare it to similarly priced knives with like features, it’s a 5.

I have probably bought about a dozen of these things over the past few years. I give them as gifts, and if I lose one, they are inexpensive enough that I keep a few extra around so I'm never without one. They take an edge quite well, although I can't duplicate the factory edge for sharpness. I just use a steel. The carbon version (vs. the stainless steel) will acquire surface rust, but it's cosmetic. I even found a knife outside that I had lost over a year prior, and cleaned it up with steel wool. It was ugly, but not noticeably pitted, and still totally usable after I re-honed the edge. Because the sheath is plastic, it was fine too. These knives snap into the sheaths with a positive click, so they don't fall out when you don't want them to, but they are very easy to remove with one hand. And they've all been very consistent in how easily they snap in/out. The plastic handles are pretty indestructible too. And the high cost of most other "serious" knives, makes these things seem like the best value possible. There is no reason to get upset if something happens to it ... just get a new one.

So it came sharp and strong. But the chrome finish looks like it didn't make it into the spine of the blade, though that statement doesn't make much sense that's the best way I can describe what I'm seeing. The spine looks like it has a recessed uneven groove where a completely different and unfinished metal can be seen. This is going to end up rusting. $11 I think I can get some rough use out of it and toss it in a garage drawer as a beater. Id return it but it took like 3 weeks to get here. Other than that it seems as solid as any Mora. Most likely just a dud, no QC during production.

This knife punches way above its price point. Sharp right out of the box, super durable, and comfortable in hand. I’ve used it for basic camp tasks and around the yard—it holds up well. The sheath clicks in securely too. Perfect for beginners and pros alike.

I don't know what more I can say about this knife that already hasn't been said before. I like every Mora knife I've owned so far. I might force a patina on this knife. What I did to this knife that I've done to my past Mora's (Companion, Eldris) was to add a Ranger band to the handle. I like a grippy like texture to knives especially knives that might get wet when doing various tasks outdoors. I could have slid the Ranger band down more towards the blade but it would have covered the indentation on the handle which would have affected the retention. The Ranger band is in the perfect spot to not interfere with the retention but still gives my three fingers (from middle finger to pinky) the added grip. So don't take this as a negative for the knife because it's not meant to be it is just a personal preference. The knife is sharp out of the package but I like to run it across my Worksharp Field Sharpener doing a few passes on the fine side, then a few passes on the ceramic rod, then a quick strop on the leather that I put some green compound on. After that all my Mora's are shaving sharp. In conclusion you cannot go wrong with this knife. As far as not being able to strike a ferro rod I have so many dedicated strikers on all my ferro rods plus when I'm outdoors I wear my Mora Eldris around my neck using paracord that I tied to be adjustable and the Mora Eldris out of the box can strike a ferro rod so just as with my Companion I didn't bother filing the spine on this Craftline 511.
