Would this be sufficient for a small project for shou sugi ban (japanese art of charring to preserve wood)? a mantle i am building

I do believe it would work for you. Even at a low setting it puts out a nice flame. I used it attached to a small camp stove sized propane tank just to warm hotmelt glue for making arrows.

fits all of your standard propane bottles for camping. The torch itself works very well.

I don't want excess flame. I need to work on a refrigerator. Does this torch control flame?

I don't think so, but it does provide a pin point flame. Should work for small job like that. Has trouble staying lit if you turn the bottle upside down though.

Can this be used with a 20lb tank and hose?

If your hose has the cga600 connection. Common on the 16oz disposable cylinders. The torch will not connect to the common connection on the 20-40lb tanks. Nor will it be a large flame for burning weeds etc.
