Poor Quality Control and Packaging
This is a good news/bad news review. The good is that after returning the first one I got one that works as I had hoped. The bad news is sort of a mixed bag. This meter is a generic design that you can find under dozens of brand names on Amazon, but out of the box it normally has bare wires rather than MC4 connectors. I believe this seller is buying them, slapping on the connecters, and then reselling. That is fine with me and shows some initiative but the problem is in the execution. My first meter arrived with a short in one wire that meant you had to wiggle the wire to get a reading. While examining it I saw that one MC4 connector was not screwed all the way shut. Looking at each the connectors where the wire comes out I saw three the had little compression tabs looking normal inside the fitting, but on the one that was not screwed in those were all mangled. Opening it up I saw that inside there is a rubber gasket of a sort that was installed backward on this one wire. Also, the display had two deep scratches. I believe this is because the box it not really big enough to hold the meter with 4 MC4 connectors that weren't meant to be there, so the connectors scratch the display. I sent it back and got another. This time the display was scratched again, but not as badly. One of the compression fittings was mangled again, but I fixed it. Nothing was backward, and there was no short. It works, but if their one job is to add MC4 connecters to a generic meter and repackage they are doing a sloppy job of both. Quality control is poor, but it seems to be the only game in town.
