Buying for school. need to solder solitaire rings because normal solder isn't working the best. good enough?

For the life of me can't understand why anyone would answer, in some form, "I don't know". How the paste works with the solder used needs to be tested. I did. Wife makes 3D dream catchers using 4mm dia wire rings, in various diameters 6"-18" (all are coated) from craft stores. Rosin (or flux) core solder work ok but I've found this SOLDER-IT SILVER BEARING SOLDER PASTE used with solid LEAD FREE SILVER BEARING solder holds the best using a butane torch. Key is, one must heat what's being soldered after the paste is used and before the solder is applied. Temperature is everything. If the base material can be heated with a soldering iron by all means use it as the solder flows and bonds towards the base material.

what type of metal is left behind?, silver?

I only used a small amount when I created a amethyst and sterling dragonfly for a client, still have quite abit of the soldering silver left. I used a low heat soldering iron (silver melts at a fairly low temperature)

Could I use this on gold costume jewelry jump rings or will the silver look too obvious? I am at a loss as to what to use for the jump rings.

You could use it on the gold costume jewelry, however, it would be obvious it is not gold. You would better using Solder Paste With Flux Yellow Gold 14k 1 Dwt.
