If you put some Listerine onto the sponge (or wet paper towels, if you get tired of cleaning the sponge), less mold will form.

Avoid using chemicals in your wet palette that threaten to affect the characteristics of the paint like dish soap, peroxide, alcohol, and vinegar. FOR EXAMPLE: dish soap reduced surface tension of water and will change how the paint flows; vinegar is an acid and could change the pH of the acrylic - destroying its pigment binding chemistry and potentially causing the paint to reactivate when it gets wet; alcohols (including Listerine with alcohol) significantly speeds up the paint drying time (exactly what you don't want in a wet palette); and hydrogen peroxide will cause pigment clumping - causing interesting but uncontrollable effects on saturation and contrast. Three one-cent pennies under the sponge will effectively inhibit mold, mildew, bacteria because copper ions are anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. The thin copper plating on the newer zinc (post 1982) pennies are enough to prevent microbial growth. Do use distilled water.

Does it come with one sponge?

Yes. It comes with the spongy layer and some paper. The paper is actually washable, so I just rinse it off and reuse it. I've even scrubbed it lightly with a sponge. It's a different kind of paper. Some stains remain but they don't hurt anything. I use one side then turn it over and use the other side. I've used one sheet of paper for awhile now.

I didn't get directions can anyone fill me in?

I do as Jerry Harber does up to a point...I wet the sponge and the paper and put my paints directly on the paper. Then I mist the paints when I finish and close the palette. I also use regular palette paper when I run out of the special paper that came with the palette. I have also used copy paper. Hope this helps you...

my acrylics stay wet but get runny, almost completely useless after a couple of days, any solutions?

Hi, You are using too much water. Wring the sponge well, flap or pat dry the paper after wetting. If paint continues to get too thin, leave lid off to allow evaporation. Add a touch of household ammonia to the water before soaking sponge and paper. This keeps everything fresh and helps reduce skimming while open. When dry enough, mist lightly to maintain proper moisture and prevent skim.

I had to write a review like a few other people because some of these negative reviews are ridiculous. First off it's a nice square sealed plastic dish with a sponge and a few sheets of paper. You can't really mess that up or complain but some people apparently did. My sponge tore? Well what were you doing to it? It's a thin delicate sponge. Treat it nicely. You barely touch it anyway. It's too expensive? It's 12 dollars. If 12 dollars maybe twice in your life time is too much for you? Well maybe it's time to reevaluate your life choices and financial needs if 12 dollar's for a reusable item is too much for you lol. I get mold or mildew? Well it's called cleaning and the world we live in. Things grow in water. That's life. Clean it. Your not supposed to leave water standing for weeks and expect it to be clean. That's biology. Clean it or add some antibacterial stuff to it. The paper sucks? Buy a different kind when this 5 free sheets are used up. Seriously all of the complaints I've read minus the paper are ridiculous kids whining. Those types of people will never be happy with anything. Who takes the time to make a negative review on such mundane stuff? It's a Tupperware dish with a sponge. It's great and a great design for what it's meant for period. Could you make your own? Sure. Once you spend about 10 bucks on supplies you get a crappy looking knockoff and time wasted....but you stuck it to the man lol. Anyway long story short. If you are looking for a wet palette this thing is great and works great. The paper is meh but it's paper.....it's disposable after a few times. Buy a roll or Reynolds parchment and you will be set for years. Massive 3 dollar investment there so consult your financial advisor. Also please for the negative reviewers....please ventilate your working area more because it's affecting you obviously.

Wonderful product. My paints I mixed 2 days ago still fresh. Earlier I would go restless when the paints dried very quick on an open pallet.
