The poetry chosen for GCSE these days often lacks rhyme or metre and seems to be chosen for its obscure themes rather than its literary merit. Worse still, the exam questions expect students to gush over these works as though they were timeless masterpieces, which feels forced and insincere. That said, this guide does an excellent job of breaking down the process of analysing unseen poetry into manageable steps. It provides clear examples, useful tips for approaching different types of questions, and plenty of practice material. My daughter found it straightforward to use, and it gave her the confidence to deal with the subject despite her lack of enthusiasm for the poems themselves. While it can’t change the nature of the poetry set for GCSE, this book ensures students are equipped to handle it as efficiently as possible. My daughter did well enough in this section of her exam, and I think this guide played a significant role in that success. Recommended for students who need to get through this part of the syllabus with minimal pain.
