Q: how does it hold the papers? does it have pockets?

You lay the file/sorter on its side as you would any file in a drawer and it does not have pockets. I use it in the front of my file drawer to file documents that I need to revisit by the day and/or month. It's a great daily "to do" file sorter to follow up on documents on "due" dates, etc. I use this for both home and work. I definitely recommend this item!

Q: If you put a regular file folder between these dividers, does it cover up the dividers behind it?

Hi Gail, I just placed a file folder inside this "desk organizer/sorter" to check for you, and all the numbers on the edge are still visible! It's really well constructed with great room for expansion. Also file folders fits in there quite nicely. Hope this helps, Barb

Just one, but it has 1 through 31 and also January through December. One of my favorites!

Q: Will this product work for filing a years' worth of invoices?

It is really designed to help you sort your invoices (or other paperwork) so that you can then file them fast. It isn't the best choice to actually use as a file.
