Average quality horror film made nearly unwatchable by constant extreme volume swings
Well, I kind of had a feeling this would be a so-so horror flick in spite of the high average ratings, but, it just goes to show that star ratings are only a rough guide to how good any particular movie will be. It didn't disappoint in spooky and eerie content. There was more than enough of that to keep it from getting boring - more or less. But what REALLY GOT ON MY NERVES, was the constant shifting in volume from people speaking at barely above a whisper level of volume, to sudden EXTREME volume jumps in order to shock and jar the viewer. This is one of the cheapest, most amateur methods a horror filmmaker can use to try to be "scary" and the producers of this film went WAY overboard with it. Since I was watching it late at night with other people sleeping in adjacent rooms, I couldn't let the volume get too high. Normally this isn't a problem and I just lower the volume with the remote if the movie begins to get too loud. Well, forget it with this movie. It goes from barely audible to apocalyptic, insane LOUD in the blink of an eye. All the time. The whole movie. Without warning. All in a clumsy, amateurish attempt to scare you out of your seat. Which, granted, it does, simply because the human brain is wired to jump at sudden loud sounds. But it's an extremely annoying and lame practice that some filmmakers use as if it's the best thing since Velcro. I watched the entire movie, but I had to wait until daylight hours to finish the second half so I wouldn't wake anyone up with the manic swings in loudness. Who wants to watch a horror movie about the "Boogeyman" when the sun is shining outside? Who does that? Well, you will if you have roommates or family that go to bed relatively early at night. Or you could wear headphones and risk permanent deafness or tinnitus. Or just not even watch this movie. Your choice, but now you know...

Solid horror flick
Barry Watson stars as troubled young adult who had a traumatic experience with a supernatural force that was the Boogeyman. No one believes him, and he even questions his own sanity. As things start to unravel, he must confront his childhood demons. The story is set up pretty well, and the acting surprisingly good. There are some genuine scares here. Overall, it gets convoluted at certain points, but is still a pretty solid horror movie.

You really want to like the camera work, but all for naught some bad CG.
Builds up and you think it's going somewhere, then where there should be a climax there is a gaping hole that the protagonist just sort of falls into and before you know it he lands on his feet and the movie is over with no real resolution or character developed. The camera man worked his butt off and nails the angles, so there are time when you'll be that edge of your seat only to have to go the next scene and literally be spoon fed exposition.

Root of Fear
As one who grew up being warned about the boogeyman, this had more relevance to me than my kids. If not for a fabulous opening sequence, I would have scored this a 2.5 or 3, but there's nothing like reinforcing a child's fears to add pleasure to the thing. As a horror fan, I found Boogeyman to be decent although fairly predictable and I would have been far happier without the "happy ending" element. There were some good things going on, nice interaction between characters and some nice cinematography.Probably most enjoyable if you are over the age of 30 and remember the simple pleasures of childhood fear in the name of "the boogeyman".

What's the problem??
Hey, we'll I never thought I'd write a review about a movie, but I was looking at all the no-no's on this movie and reckoned it's got a really unfair rap. I'm pretty easily put off by all the usual cliches and cheap shots in horror movies, but I've gotta say I thought Boogeyman was one of best paced, interestingly filmed and directed movies of this genre I've seen in ages! It was genuinely creepy and certainly had me looking over my shoulder for a while. The CG's and ending weren't the best, but the tension through the movie is palpable.. nice one!!

Good flick
It's actually a pretty good film, well done, easy to watch and follow the plot. I don't understand why so many negative reviews.

Not good
Like the second film in this series I had high hopes but it wasn't scary at all. The cover was the only thing that scared me.
