THE THIRD THREE YEARS

I ripped open the package, stuck the CD in my computer (because that's what we do these days) and clicked play expecting great things. What I got were some OK things.I bought this CD for 1 song only, Poncho and Lefty. I saw him do it live a few years ago and it was amazing. This recorded version was good, but a bit of a disappointment. Great songs from previous albums become good on this one. There seems to have been something missing during recording. I'll let it spin for a few more days and may revisit the review, but my for now, I stand by my 3 stars.

Great album, maybe the best of Frank's unique "Three Year Series". Lots of music that could easily go on one of his "regular" CD releases but is more fun in this context b/c of the variety of songs contained: covers,outtakes,alternative versions and a healthy 21 songs. The only downside is it will be three more years for volume four in his "Three Years" series. Hey Frank, how about making it a "Next TWO Year"series?

It's a decent Frank Turner album. Not as good as the 1st and 2nd Three Years. I think it lacks the passion in the original songs, but the covers are great, especially "Pancho and Lefty."

If you are a a Frank fan then you will want this album in your collection. It's great.

Fantastic album.

This is probably not the most 'must buy' of Frank Turner's three three-year compilations (I'd reserve that for The First Three years, mainly because it contains the two early EPs, which are a key part of Frank's back catalogue), but it's possibly becoming my favourite.The album is (broadly, but with a bit of license) split into three sections: new songs by Frank (i.e. ones that aren't on another album), covers, and then unreleased or live versions of songs from his studio albums. Perhaps fittingly, my three highlights come one from each of those categories.Hits and Mrs was probably simply too happy to fit with the narrative of Tape Deck Heart, and so ended up as the B Side on Losing Days, and then here. It's a love song, and a happy one, with a bit of Noah and the Whale about it (or some shared influences), and there's something about it that makes me smile, both at the topic, and at how Frank has, as always, got it spot on. Nice pun, too, of course.Fields of June is a duet with Emily Barker (which just about fits into the covers section), and it's brilliant for the lovely, folky way the song is put together, as well as the cutting and heart-rending story, accompanied by superb and heart-rending vocals.And my favourite of the alternative versions is the acoustic Plain Sailing Weather. It's epic, raw and anthemic in the rockier album version, and here, stripped back, its emotion hit me anew. (The beautiful piano version of Tell Tale Signs is a very, very close second.)There are other worthy mentions due to Riot Song, American Girl, There Are Bad Times Just Around the Corner and Sweet Albion Blues, which has grown on me in the end. And everything from track 15 onwards is golden: piano and acoustic versions, with the album finished with a rattling, rock version of Dan's Song.Ah, it's great.

Frank does it again. There're some real rough-cut gems on here; the echoing Fields of June, the feel good Happy New Year, the haunting Kiera.This is three more years of an artist who clearly loves what he does and does what he loves.If you like Frank, you know what he does and you know what to expect. This is no exception. Buy this album, you will not regret it.

I think Frank is one of the best live acts i have seen in recent years.This album however is very average with several covers that add very little.The best songs are his own!!There is also regular use of the F word which means I have to consider the offence it may cause to passengers when i play the disk in the car.

It's Frank Turner.... What's not to love?!2 excellent collaborations on this album as well as some nice covers showing appreciation for Frank's heroes.

Same as previous two; not essential unless you're a real FT fan, but there are some gems among the tracks.
