Great Sound, Quality Unit.
I am very impressed with this Yamaha Dock. Previously, our only iPod dock was on the Yamaha receiver in our living room entertainment system with surround speakers making the music sound incredible. I wanted a simple, easy to move dock that did not sacrifice sound quality for aesthetics (and vice versa) and no more than $100. I thought I was pipe-dreaming until I found this Yamaha PDX-30 Speaker Dock, which also charges your iPod when playing! Though I am not a die-hard music aficionado, I am like most people who love music and want to hear all parts of it in full clarity, as if you are in-studio or at a concert, all at a reasonable price. After using this unit for a number of weeks I am very happy with it and highly recommend it. Just yesterday I heard sounds in a song I have been listening to since childhood that I had never heard before, that is when I decided to write this review. The sound quality is fantastic, not too tinny, not too bass-heavy, no weird echo-like sound, just wonderful. This goes for music from John Denver to The Beastie Boys to techno-dance to Brandie Carlile with the Seattle Symphony and everything in between. Incredible. I purchased the grey color and am very pleased with it, the white trim seemed a bit bright at first, but I like it much more than I would have liked grey with black trim. The rectangular shape is clean and neat, fitting perfectly on an open bookshelf and lends itself well to moving around into other rooms as needed. There are no other bells and whistles, like a radio or clock, but I didn't want any thing other than a quality dock and leave it to Yamaha to do just that. Note: I am using this with a second generation iPod Touch and must remove the bottom part of my case when I dock it. If you see a red light it indicates a connection is not made, which worried at me first but I figured it out quickly.

Beats Bose by a mile.
I read all the reviews of the black model, and there seems to be a consensus that the sound quality of this Yamaha is overly bass-heavy, so when it arrived last week I was expecting to be slightly disappointed in the sound. Far from it! Although I agree with another poster who suggested setting your iPod's EQ to the "jazz" setting for a brighter tone balance, the reality is this unit sounds exceptional right out of the box. The ease of use is typically brilliant, and the remote is as intuitive as the iPod itself. And in case you care (as I do), this until hits harder than you'd expect for such compact dimensions. I live in a 1300 sq. ft. apartment, and it's the only sound system I need - even for parties. It easily has the muscle to overpower a condo packed with revelers, and the distortion even at high volume levels is commendably low. Factor in the Japanese minimalism of the design and the funky blue color scheme and the PDX-30BU scratches me where I itch. I love the thing. Admittedly, if your tastes run toward gadgety features on a speaker system, this definitely isn't the unit for you. It doesn't do anything except play your music. But if you're looking for sound quality and muscle that puts something like the (woefully overrated) Bose SoundDock on the trailer, then this is the best bang for the buck anywhere. Get it. You'll love it.

Junk
I have an older Yamaha reciever that I love so I was expecting this product to be worth the money. It is not. The sound is muddy and unbalanced especially at low volume. Battery life in the remote is less than 1 week. Call, e-mail Yamaha to complain or ask for advice ..... good luck with that.

Great buy and very good sound for the money.
This is a very good product, quality wise and sound wise. The overall sound quality doesn't equal for example a Boze system, but you are also paying perhaps 40% to 50% less than the Boze. Having said that, this little box can fill the room with high quality sound. We purchased the PDX-30GY for use on our patio when we we're sitting out there and it does a great job putting out the sounds. The remote is easy to use. The only disadvantage is that the unit does not run on batteries for greater portability. For the money, though I don't think you can beat this unit.

A very good value!
I am extremely impressed with the quality of this product. The appearance, construction and, above all, sound quality are first rate. Yamaha is generally known for producing high quality components, instruments, etc. and this dock has exemplary sound quality. I purchased this speaker dock for my office so that I could play my large collection of music on my 160 gig classic. I have loaded my music using the lossless format as I do not enjoy compressed digital audio( I play vinyl Lp, CD and SACD on my home system). I am somewhat fussy with audio-not exactly a card-carrying audiophile but probably closer to that designation than most folks. I am very pleased-the mid range and treble are very detailed, warm and sweet-the base is definitely not boomy but is fully integrated into a realistic sound portrait. I listen to opera, jazz, rock and folk. My rock tastes are old school-so be advised that I am not listening to head banging stuff or rap. I do not know how they do it at this very reasonable price. If I could take it to a desert island I would so so.

So glad I chose this one!
I got 20 different suggestions from friends when I wanted to get an iPod docking station. This was one of them. After doing all my comparisons, this is the one I chose. And I couldn't be happier with it! The range on the remote is FANTASTIC. (I sit outside with the windows open with the remote and the station is what equates to two rooms away... and it works great!) This gets louder than I ever thought it would, too. The audio is clear and my husband complains about how loud it is when I haven't even had it at halfway up. I'm very glad I didn't go with a cheaper option b/c I don't think it could have made me as happy as I am with this one!
