I love fountain pens and script writing
Being older, I come from a time when most people did use a pen or pencil of some sort to write with (before computers!). I have played around with script fonts on my computer and thought it would be fun to learn and practice calligraphy. This set truly has everything you need - several different width nibs, several ink cartridges as well as four pens. The set also include a small booklet on starting out practicing calligraphy as well as a booklet of practice paper. I am having fun seeing how fancy I can make lettering in different colored inks. Craftspeople would love this, a parent or grandparent spending time with their child or grandchild might find this a nice activity, and last, but not least, those planning a wedding and wanting to learn a skill they could use making handmade invitations, table name cards, and the like - this would be a great kit to learn with!

Know what you're buying
It baffels me how many people wrote negative reviews on a product they obviously knew nothing about. I checked out this pen set and one of the first things I noticed was when it said it was a great set for BEGINNERS. Of course you're not going to get the same quality from these pens as you would from a several-hundred-dollar professional set, but it's great for what it is. It's a great set to start out with. So far I haven't had a problem with ANY of the pins or nibs. When I got it I immediately inserted an ink cartridge into each nib and went to town. Was able to doodle and scratch around for quite a surprising time before the ink ran out. The ink does bleed through the paper some, but alot of that can be countered by the pressure you put on the pen, as well as adjusting the angle/speed of your stroke. While the "instruction booklet" is more of a letter guide, showing you multiple calligraphic alphabets, but does not show you how to make each letter (tho with a little common sense and practice it can be figured out pretty easily). One thing that pleasingly surprised me about this set was the fact that you don't have to worry about "Lefty-Splatter" (a condition common to left handed people as with certain strokes we're actually pushing the nib across the paper instead of pulling it, which sometimes causes the nib to splatter extra ink on the page, a problem which I have yet to encounter. So basically, to sum this up, it's not a high dollar professional set, but for a beginner it is a fine starter set.

This is a SOLID way to determine if calligraphy/lettering is for you. Well worth the price!
I held off on reviewing until I had a good grasp of this set & what it has to offer. Someone said "you got what you paid for" and that is largely true. Don't expect this set to be the answer to your dreams of mastering calligraphy and hand lettering. It won't be. But it is a good jumping off point that plunges you into that handwriting world? Yes! It gave me the time to play with different nibs, different ink colors and styles. It also makes you VERY appreciable of that first quality pen when you buy it! Playing with this set I didn't become a calligraphy superstar but I did learn which nib sizes work better for my handwriting and that's a great thing. Now I know which direction I want to go and what things I didn't like. I'm not bitter like some are over this set. It costs 1/2 or less than 1/2 of what a cheaper good quality name brand pen costs. This set taught me to control different nib sizes and set me on the paths to getting what I really want. Does ink get jammed? Yes. Is it frustrating? Yes. Does my journal look like Sybil made the entries? Sometimes. But it's a learning process. So yes, it's cheap but How Much Did You Pay? I think for the price, this is a solid way to determine if you really want to proceed or if it's not the "hobby" for you. That alone saves you a lot of $$. I appreciate this set for lighting a fire in me for more. All in all...Worth More Than I Paid!!

Okay set with too many issues for reliant use
I had high hopes for this set, but these pens were troublesome to use. They may be nice for those who want to practice as beginners, but could also be frustrating to practice with compared to other calligraphy pens. The pen bodies feel like cheap plastic while seeming otherwise from first look. The set as a whole is impressive to look at and would be beautiful as a gift, but prove otherwise once you begin using them. The pressure needed to get ink flowing feels like it will be too much on the nib, even then the flow is not consistent. I've had several issues with keeping the flow of ink from the cartridges into the nib, even after rinsing out the nibs under water and keeping them clean. Several times I've had to tap the nib tip to get it flowing, and even then it often would still be clogged. I was sure to be consistent in keeping the nib clear with a clean rag, but to no success. Sometimes "violent" shaking would get the ink flow to return, but only for a short while. This was an extremely frustrating process. Hoping the flow issue was with the provided ink wells, I used others purchased from Joann's - same result. Only leakage I've had was result of thinking the cartridge was empty when the nib was not flowing and disassembling the pen to rinse. The provided instructions state to place a cartridge of ink in the upper cavity of the pen, however this is not necessary and if anything helps create a bigger mess if your current ink well is leaking. The cartridges that I have yet to use have had no leaking issues, making me wonder if those who've complained about them leaking are using them in pens and then removing them, expecting the ink wells to not leak.
