Insulsure at-2 Attic Tent - 25 x 54 x 7 in.

Installed the smaller (AT-1) in a Acustomers house last month. They love it. I'm ordering another one today. Their installation instructions assume a flat floored area around all sides of the stairway and in that setup installation is pretty straightforward. If your attic is other than that, it gets a little more complicated. The one I put in was in a truss roof right where the diagonal bracing met the ceiling joists. That necessitated the extension of the stairway frame up to attic floor level to get an even attachment surface all way around.Didn't like the "staple down flange" with small staples though, as I can see that not being a durable seal over the years, and a pneumatic stapler shoots right thru it. My solution was overlay a thin strip of wood on the flanges for a clamp bar then pneumatic staples (screws would work equally well) to attach flange of the tent to the attic floor or rafters. Otherwise, the product looks quite durable, at least for an attic that is only accessed a few times a year and is easy to operate from the ladder. All things considered, it is within the capabilities the average handyman to install.The claim about the Tent not meeting building codes is technically correct (and it doesn't make claim to), but then it comes a lot closer than the stairway itself does. And if you look carefully what "R" value really is all about (it's a rating of a material's ability to trap and hold air), the dead air space that the tent forms between the attic stair door and the tent is probably getting pretty close. The competitive product mentioned in the reviews will probably be a better choice for scuttle holes, which is what it's advertised to do. I have built several versions of that one in my 26 yrs as a GC, and with that knowledge I'm not sure I would go that route with a folding stair.My only dislikes on the "Tent" were the staple flange and the "Made in China" sticker. One final note. When measuring for the tent, allow for the "arms" in the height. If you have less than 6" of ceiling thickness, you will need the taller model unless you extend the sides of the stairway frame.

I have a 100 year old home and the attic opening happens to sit right above our thermostat. The entire hallway and wing of the house was probably 5-8 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. On top of that, the attic opening sits right next to the cold air return for our furnace. Before I put the attic cover on, the furnace would never stop running, and on top of that the temp in the house would continue to drop. The cold air return was basically pulling the cold air from the leaky attic door and the whole hallway stayed cold so the thermostat would never register an increase in the temp in the house.One main tip before ordering: Measure first! Not every opening is perfect, and I had to some modifying to get this to fit the opening. While you're putting it in, follow all the tips they include. I bought a can of spray foam insulator ($4 at a big box store) and sealed up everything around the opening. Also I bought some high quality caulking and ran a solid line of it around the opening before stapling the whole thing down. The better the seal, the better it's all going to impact your home.Once installed I've noticed an immediate difference. The house can maintain temps, the hallway and wing of the house where the attic opening is holds about the same temp as the rest of the house. When I go into the attic the difference between our living area and the attic space is night and day. Our home was around 74 degrees inside and when I went to work in the attic, temps were close to 100 degrees up there.If you have an attic opening, definitely put one of these in. It will pay for itself in a matter of time. Great product, great quality!One last tip: To really increase it's impact, cut some fiberglass batts and attach them to the top of the cover, this will increase the insulating properties of the cover.

We live in New England and experience all 4 seasons. In the summer it can get extremely hot and in the winter, extremely cold. We have a pull down attic stairway which is in one of the bedrooms we recently converted to a nursery. Prior to converting the room, we were always closing the door to that room in the summer/winter because of the heat/cold we felt coming through the pull-down. We would also feel that it was drafty in the winter. In addition, that room had the heat/air settings for one of the zones in our house which made keeping the house at constant norm nearly impossible. We purchased this piece and had it installed (my uncle is a handy man and we didn't want the responsibility of screwing it up so we had him do it). WOW!! What a difference! We spent one summer and winter walking by it, checking for drafts, noting how many times we had to adjust the thermostat - nothing! We would open it to go to the attic in the winter and were amazed that we didn't feel the cold penetrate as we pulled the attic stairs down (same for the summer with the heat). We converted that room into the nursery and have never had an issue with that room being hotter/colder than the other rooms in the house - baby sleeps in it perfect all year round, door is kept open (or shut when baby is trying to sleep). My uncle was so impressed, he went off to by one for his home as well! Highly recommended!
