Very Effective with Woodstove and Forest Fire Smoke
I have three of these. One is on loan. We have been under a smoke hazard warning for about a month from the huge forest fires around us. Visibility is often less than a mile. Many days, the air is rated in the "hazardous" range. The good news is that we aren't threatened by fire locally--at least not at this time. These filters WORK! I do have the carbon pre-filters in. I have one running on each floor. The air in the house is.wonderful. Having to go outside to do something is not so wonderful. I bought a third unit rather than call back the one I have on loan because he needs.to be able to breathe as.well. It takes about 24 hours to completely clean the air on a floor--air that was bad enough to make you cough. My original review--I heat with a woodstove. It has been a VERY long winter. There have been no breaks to really get the house aired out. Although I have very little dust, the particles in the little bit of smoke that leaks out were starting to make me cough. I ordered one of these aircleaners and put it next to the woodstove. The difference was noticable within a few hours. I ordered a second one for upstairs. My cough is completely gone. You can hear the fan, but it isn't an annoying fan noise. It really moves the air. As soon as we get a few warm days, I will be changing the fiberglass gasket on the stove and tightening the stove up. I am sure these cleaners will be just as effective on the spring pollen and the dust of summer.

For the Allergenic...
We have three cats... the third one we rescued a month ago. I've been allergic to animals with fur all my life, until I got my boyfriend, who came with two cats. So I had to quickly get over my allergies, which took about 6 months and a few inhalers. But for the most part I've gotten over the cat allergies. However, when we got the third cat a month ago, my allergies kicked in high gear: Itchy eyes, dry skin, sneezing, itchy skin, asthma and breathing issues. I'll just say it was not good. At all. So I went on an Amazon shopping trip, and bought three things: 1) Eureka 71B Hand-Held Vacuum, to vacuum all the cat hair and dander on the couches, since we hang out a lot in the living room. 2) The Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower HEPAQuiet Air Purifier with Permanent IFD Filter for the living room to clean out the air, dander, spring pollen, and dust. And 3) The Hamilton Beach 04383 True Air Allergen-Reducing Air Cleaner for the bedroom to get the air cleaned out there from cat hair/dander, clothing dust, and bedsheet/blanket dust. (I also have those hypo-allergenic pillow covers that prevent dust and mites from infesting the pillow.) Air filters -- We actually already own the Honeywell HFD Tower and love it, except the oscillator broke so we moved it into another room (we like it because it's pretty easy to clean, very powerful and does its job). So we bought another one to get the air circulating better. Within the first 4 hours of running the air filters the air was noticeably cleaner and less thick. We left for a few drinks with friends, and by the time we got back, the air purifiers did a great job of cleaning and purifying the air. I could smell the difference in the air, and most importantly my lungs felt great! For the first time in a few months, I didn't have to walk into a wall of cat smells and thick gunky air. If you own pets, know what I'm talking about. The Eureka handvac - If you've got cat hair and dander as we do, THIS is the machine to fix your problems. The first time I fired up the machine, it picked up about a half inch of cat hair, dander, dust and whatever else! This is a white couch, so you can SEE if there's stuff on it... but it looked clean enough before I ran the vacuum on it... who knew there was so much hidden germies and hair all up in there?! Y'all better run this machine on your couch too and see what you pick up! Suffice to say, the vacuum is great, the air filters are very good, and the combination of them all is really helping my allergies. Thank goodness because it's been causing nights of insomnia. Now I get a good night's rest.

A helping hand in house cleaning!
I originally became interested in purchasing an air purifier in hopes that something, anything, would help with the heavy dust that accumulates in our bedroom. I did a lot of research before purchasing the Honeywell HFD-120-Q Tower Quiet Air Purifier, but in the end this model seemed to meet all of our needs and was in our budget. Before you purchase this model, or anything air purifier, please do some research on ionic air purifiers as they alter the ozone levels which may pose some health risks. This is a personal decision, but I think it is important for consumers to educate themselves before deciding to purchase any air purifier. On arrival, the model was in the box ready to go, no putting pieces together- just unpack and plug in. The instructions on operating and cleaning the unit are very clear and to the point. The instructions will tell you to place the model away from the wall, this is due to the fact that the model pulls in all of this dirt, dust, and dander which can quickly accumulate on your walls. We did not place the unit as far away from the wall as directed due to space issues, and sure enough big black patches around the unit. We continue to use the purifier in the same spot, but we are more adamant about wiping down the surrounding wall space. Once the unit has been running for awhile, you will notice a very distinct smell in the room and surrounding areas. I would not say the smell is "bad", just strong. If you are super sensitive to smells I recommend placing the unit in your garage and running it for a few hours. The odor quickly fades (it was gone within 6 hours for us) and has never returned. The instructions say it will take a few days to notice any difference in your home and that you have to give the unit time to "work". I am not sure how true this is, and although I did not keep track of the days I did notice a decrease in pet dander and dust. Since our cat sleeps on our bed, pet dander was a huge issue for us and I was very relieved to see that the unit does indeed pick up these particles. I do however want to add that this purifier does not ELIMINATE anything, we still have dust, cat hair, etc. floating around- but I have been able to dust every 3 or so days instead of everyday! I keep the unit on high most of the day and night, often using the oscillating feature. This unit on high will feel like a small room fan. In fact, it works so much like a fan that we often find ourselves turning off our ceiling fan (yep, even on hot days) because it gets much too cold with both of them running. The unit is not silent, but it is not obnoxiously loud either. It sounds much like a fan, and we enjoy the white noise while we sleep. We have not experienced any clicking or extremely loud noises like others have...perhaps we just got lucky or they have defective models? Either way, if you are looking for a unit that is silent, you will not find it here. The unit comes with an "indicator" light which is suppose to tell you when it is time to clean the permanent filters. We did not want to worry about purchasing filters all of the time, so this sounded perfect to us! Unfortunately, the light does not seem to indicate a need for cleaning, even when it clearly needs it. After about a month of constant use, I noticed dust and other particles becoming heavier in our room. I immediately checked the light thinking perhaps the filter was dirty, however the light remained off. I did a quick check, just in case, and found that the filters were filthy. Fortunately, the filters are easy to remove and clean! When cleaning your filters, please turn off the unit and unplug it! This is important! The manual suggests running water over the filters, however I found a quick vacuuming of them worked just fine and only took about five minutes! Once you see the amount of dust and dirt your purifier has picked up you will be oh so thankful you purchased a purifier!

I can breathe inside again (GREAT for pets!!)
I bought this air filter unit in 2015 and have run it just about 24 hours every day since (aside from cleaning and moving). After 6+ years this filter still works great, as long as you maintain it properly and have reasonable expectations. I have severe environmental allergies but live in a house with 3 dogs, 1 cat, and 4 house rabbits that eat hay as a main staple of their diet. This combo resulted in me waking up throughout the night and unable to breathe in the mornings especially. It was a miserable existence. I chose this filter after much consideration and comparison to other Honeywells, ultimately because the filters are reusable. This cuts down on excess waste from disposable filters, and saves money in the long run. The reusable filters are very easy to clean - just remove, rinse, soak in a little soapy water, rinse, allow to dry completely. I try to clean my filters at least monthly, and 6 years later they're still working. The difference in air quality after just an hour in a room is pretty impressive; the air just feels cleaner and I'm able to breathe like a normal human. Just note this is not a HEPA rated filter, guys. If you're expecting HEPA grade filtered air, pass on this one and buy a HEPA air filter. I have found this unit works great at removing allergens, dander, animal hair, dust, etc from the air, but it is not as effective with smaller particles like smoke (it filters smoke, but not 100%). I included an image of common airborne particle sizes for reference. The specs on the filter state 1 micrometer as the smallest particle size captured.

I really enjoy this air purifier
I received my air purifier earlier this week. So far, the unit works extremely well. I don't know why other people call it noisy. Even on the highest setting, I don't hear it. I guess if you have no noise in the house, you are going to hear it, but it's much quieter than when you listen to your air conditioner running in the house. I don't even notice it. When the TV is on, or Napster, I never hear it, even on the highest setting. I used to have to clean my filters on a cheaper unit(different brand) every third day, and both of them died after two months. I have been very impressed with the quality of this unit so far, and it works very well and removing smells. I am already a neat freak without allergies, so I purchased the unit to get rid of smoke smells. It work wonders for that. The only problem I have had is that it has increased my dog's allergies. I have a Lhasa that has eye problems, and his discharge has increased. My vet says that's because the unit pulls the air from the middle of the room, and dispenses it near the bottom of the room, and some dust discharge does come out. I haven't noticed that, but again, I get rid of dust myself like nobody's business. I honestly don't think that his discharge is due to the unit. it's allery season for him. I recommend this product. Since so many other brand units die after a couple of months, I feel confident that this one won't, and even if it does, I can return it to the manufacturer. After five days of use on low and medium, I have not had to clean the filter yet, and I run it almost the entire day. Give it a try.

Quiet and cleans the air
This is a great air purifier I bought this because I live in Alaska and we have a lot of forest fires in the summer. It got so bad that I could smell smoke in my house from the fires. I needed something to clean my air for me and my three children so we could breathe fresh air. I have always bought Honeywell products in the past so I chose their air purifier. It works great, I use it morning and night, it took the smoke out of the house, and it also made the air smell fresher than before. I liked it so much in fact that I bought 2 of them. I have one on the main floor in the living room and I keep one in my bedroom. I like that it is so quiet and it doesn't disturb me when I'm sleeping, and I also that is doesn't have any refills you have to buy. You can clean the filter and go right back to using it again. It's a great air purifier and I am very happy with my purchase.

Cannot recommend enough. Lasted me 9 tough years and still going.
I don't often write reviews, but I had to for this product. I purchased this air purifier 9 years ago in 2008 to help with an apartment that just seemed to create dust out of thin air. It helped immensely. Since then it has survived a multitude of bumpy moves with me, including a road trip across the country, and then some. I even had it in storage for a good year and a half, and when I decided to clean it and plug it back in, it's still works like the first day I bought it. It definitely does what its supposed to do. Years ago I had a curious and skeptical roommate hold a burger behind the fan while he sniffed the "purified" air that came out the front. Sure enough, he could barely smell the burger. I cannot recommend this product enough. I can't think of anything I've ever purchased that's lasted me this long and worked so well. The inner filters are easy to clean, but the foam is a bit of a pain. I just saw that they have cheap foam replacements for $8. Done! The front of the filter also needs cleaning once in a while (very seldom), and that gets a little heinous - I recommend q-tips with the two different sized ends. The purifier is also super, super quiet. Seriously, after 9 years, on its highest setting it's still quieter than most white noise machines. If I could get some kind of commission, I would market this product all over the place. What brought me here today is just that I'm looking to purchase another one to keep in a bedroom.
