Not perfect, but works very well for its intended purpose of being a truly portable way for a dyslexic student to have easy access to word pronunciations and meanings in higher level reading material during class time. I have researched nearly all possible text-to-speech solutions. There are some emerging ones that look very interesting and probably more flexible BUT they all seem to require being connected to a computer to get the full benefit - even for the initial 'reading' part. They don't just instantly give you the word(s) like this one does. (Some will let you scan whole pages with a cell phone or IPOD, but must be connected to a computer to get the 'speech' part.)

bought this for our Dyslexic 6th grader, but our 5th uses it more.If you want this to read a book to you then buy a Kindle with an Audible Plan... (This will read a whole LINE for you, one line at a time)If you want a great dictionary this is perfect. Instead of looking up a word you scan it, then using the menu you can be read the: Word, Definition, other words with similar meanings, etc...

I purchased the New-ReadingPen TS for my 16 year daughter, who is dyslexic, about 5 months. It is very easy to use and very accurate. It has made reading long passages manageable for my daughter, increased her desire to finish reading assignments and has contributed to her doing better in school. If you have someone, who struggles with reading, the pen allows them to independently listen to a story and gather the needed information without the intervention of someone else. We have been so impressed with the English language pen, that we will be purchasing the French language pen to help my daughter navigate French in high school. I would highly recommend the pen.

I wanted this for my dyslexic grandson so much that I ignored the negative reviews. Many of those were from customers who wanted this pen to actually "read" to visually handicapped people which it clearly cannot do. The reviews I should have listened to: "The technology is just not there." and " It makes more mistakes than my grandson does!" I returned it immediately although it might have been fun to see all the mistakes it made on words--Flunkeys for monkeys, galloons for balloons, and several times just nonsense combinations. The "screen" is too small to see and the voice too low to hear.

We got this pen and are absolutely amazed at what it can do. Our daughter was so excited that she was going to be able to read now without the help of others, now she just needs the pen for the words she doesn't know. The only down fall would be that it does take some practice learning to scroll it across the words. Our daughter has some fine motor issues which makes it more difficult for her to get the pen to read the words correctly as she needs to learn to scroll across slow and steady.

I thought this would help my special needs child with some cognitive impairment read better. It does not work with kids with special needs. I had the special education teacher try to use it with them. It didn't work. She even tried it different ways but didn't work for him.

This product started off great until the screen froze. I have tried emailing customer support in the owner's manual. The email was undeliverable. I tried calling the customer support phone number and the phone number is no longer in service. The website is not user friendly and hard to find what you want. There is a 2 year warranty but you can't figure out how to send it back because there is NO customer support!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dose not work with win 8 for the note transfer but other than that it works grate. Love the scene start to the computer funchen
