The lumber wizard is great when it's working properly
The lumber wizard is great when it's working properly. I'm not sure if the company sent me a bad wand or if every lumber wizard functions this way, but I'll use the wand for about 60-90 seconds and have to stop to grab a screwdriver and "fine tune" it. It's a simple process but I don't think I should have to stop every 60-90 seconds fix it. It winds up costing a lot of time over the course of an hour. I've called the number to speak with someone and every time I have the phone rings and rings and rings and the answering machine says the mailbox is full. Like I said, it's a great product when it's working but I've been very frustrated with it when it's not working.

Well worth the investment.
I came across 200 year old walnut floor planks from an old Southern cookhouse that was loaded with old rusted nails. In order to mill the wood I had to make sure that I did not miss any hidden nails. The Lumber Wizard 4 worked perfectly. I was fairly certain I had removed all of the nails but the LW proved me wrong finding several buried nails that would have ruined my planer blades. Had to calibrate it several times early on, but after that it worked like a charm. Well worth the investment.

I did not like this at all
I did not like this at all. I bought it because it was supposed to be for woodworking. I wanted to use it for finding nails and staples in old pallet wood. I read the instructions and calibrated it several times over and it wouldn’t even find a nail laying on top of the board. Neither would the smaller one they included with it. It will however find large metal objects like weapons and such with little problem, however this is not why I bought it. The company had no problem refunding my money which was a plus.

Finding Nails
I have a cabinet and fabrication shop and have been encountering more clients that are interested in using reclaimed wood for their projects. I have found these detectors to be essential in finding old nails and other pieces of metal in this material. This saves saw blades and planer knives, but more importantly, prevents sparks from being introduced into my dust collection system when I run some of this material through my wide belt sander.

I will not identify nails.
I own a small lumber mill and I bought this unit to find nails in old lumber. I have tweaked and fiddled with it but to no avail. It will not identify a nail laying on my bench, must less one in a board.
