From one archaeologist to another
Every archaeologist loves a marshalltown! I like the 4" because it allows for great control and precision work. Plus the wooden handled trowels last longer than the newer plasticy ones.

Perfect Gift for an Archaeologist
I bought the Marshalltown trowel for my daughter, a student in archaeology. I then had it engraved with her name and gave it to her for Christmas. I couldn't have asked for a better reception had I spent ten times as much; she loved it. It IS the definitive archaeologist's tool.

Great Tool
Like many other people who purchased this, the only complaint is about the holster, which appears to be made for a larger sized tool. I really don't care about that so five stars

Nice Product
I bought this to help a friend with an archeological excavation. The tool is clearly of high quality (weld of blade to handle is top notch) and the case is very nice.

Nicely Made, Sloppy Fit
While the quality of this tool and the accompanying hard leather holster is excellent, the fit of the tool in the holster is pretty loose. I suspect that the holster is intended to accommodate a larger trowel. In any case, both items are excellent, even if they do not play as well together as I would like. In an effort to leverage this deficit into something positive, I have also taken to storing my margin trowel Marshalltown 52 5-Inch by 2-Inch Margin Trowel in the holster. It isn't a pretty combination, but it works. My overall conclusion is that the holster/trowel combo will work for most of us, but Indiana Jones is going to lose his trowel in the first good fight scene. Of course, be sure to order one of these 60" Old West Style Bullwhip if that's your style of archaeology

Toosl of the trade
Bought this item for work purposes for archeological field test. My supervisor used one, having purchased it in England many years ago. Have yet to use it, as alas I am in the office more than I like this season. Its straight diamond shaped outline and small size is great for those smaller test pits. Of course, cannot find anything like this in Anchorage, Alaska.

Marshalltown ideal para arqueólogos.

The holster is easy to attach to the belt and carry the trowel with ease. The interior of the holster is made of two sheaths of plastic as to not damage the interior when keeping the trowel inside. Overall a good quality build. The trowel itself is great. Have been using it for a couple of weeks on a dig and it works really well with different types of soil (hard, compressed, loose or clay-like). Very sturdy. I would recommend cleaning the blade and handle often, depending on the type of soil you have to deal with. Great purchase!

Tried and tested in a Roman cemetery, has a firm grim and survived contact with scraping back ironstone. Loses one star because the scabbard was listed as plastic - which it is, but it's plastic that's covered with leather and thus unusable to me.
