Dan August: Complete Collection

Terrific one season crime series; this Burt Reynolds dvd set is overall wonderful! Picture, sound, and color look great. Very pleased. 📺

Really good series

Absolutely great service But terrible show

It was great to see all the episode. Especially after years of looking at traded vhs copies from various places around the world. Sure the episodes are not remastered. However, they are at least a nine. Very similar in quality to what Columbia House used to put out on vhs back in the day. To address the sound. The copies I had did not have the issues with the sound track being off. Everything matched up perfectly. The individual episodes seemed complete. They run about 49 1/2 minutes. If anything is missing, it might be the promo for the next weeks episode. Which I wish they would include in all dvd releases. Overall a good series with a lot of guest stars. A case in point would be the episode titled "The Manufactured Man" which not only guest stared Harrison Ford but Billy Dee Williams as well. A little foreshadowing of what was to come a few years down the road.

Like many others, I remember this series from its original run, and I certainly remember the TV movie pilot, which stood out in that period. I did not, however, like others, find the quality to be poor. Other than a handful of momentary video issues and voices being higher than normal here and there, the overall quality is just fine. The show itself didn't have the sophistication of later series, but the stories were rather good, and it was fun to see guest stars from old Hollywood (Mickey Rooney, Walter Pidgeon), as well as up-and-comers like Martin Sheen and Harrison Ford. Yep, he was in an episode with future co-star, Billy Dee Williams. "Dan August" might not suit the tastes of those who didn't see it in 1970-71, but it was a good cop show that should have had a longer run. Its star did okay, since his next project was a little film called "Deliverance."

I’m too young to recall watching the “Dan August” series when it originally aired, starting in 1970. However, one thing I do remember seeing on TV as a kid is a chilling kitchen murder scene that left an indelible impression on my young mind for decades to come. With the release of “Dan August: The Complete Collection” DVD set I’ve now discovered that that scene is from the made-for-TV-movie “House on Greenapple Road,” a movie that introduced the character of Dan August (played by Christopher George) to TV viewers more than six months before the first episode of the “Dan August” series, starring Burt Reynolds, would air. Other than “+ TV Movie” on its cover, there’s no indication on the packaging that “HoGR” is included in the set, nor as of this writing, is it mentioned in the above product description. For me, this movie’s inclusion is a selling point, as I imagine it may be for others. From my little bit of online research, “HoGR” was considered cutting-edge television for its time, and while its production is representative of the era, the movie still holds up for me as a classic 70’s crime drama. I now look forward to discovering the actual “Dan August “ series for the first time!

The picture is clear & colorful & the sound & dialogue is clear & full. The show itself is very cool. A Quinn Martin cop series you can't go wrong with. Should've lasted longer imo. It had a really slick feel to it. Sort of like cop movies of the period.

I've watched most of the episodes, and I have to say that this show really holds its own against other crime shows of the time, even Mannix. Burt Reynolds was mesmerizing as detective Dan August, and his instantly recognizable persona and physicality was much in evidence and elevated even the most derivative plot lines. It was said, however, that producer Quinn Martin was displeased with the often political or socially-conscious themes of the show, and this may have been a reason why the show wasn't renewed after the first season. The show found a new life later in syndication after Reynolds became a film star after Deliverance. I have to admit that I miss these shows where human intelligence and toughness meant more that CSI gimmicks and self-righteousness.

Had never heard about this short lived series. When I found out it was Quinn Martin, I had to get it. Love all the Quinn Martin series from the 70's.
