How do you get the needle to pick up cotton from underneath

When you have threaded the machine qith your chosen thread, and the bobbin is loaded and in the correct way, bring the top thread to the front of the machine. Turn your wheel ( on the right of the machine) towards you to make the needle go up and down. In doing so it will travel under the feed dogs ( those bits that move the fabric back and forth)and collect the bobbin thread.  Watch it carefully and you will see this happen.  Then get a scissor or tweezer and gather both threads from under the needle and put them towards the back of the machine, so they trail behind the needle. Hope this is easy for you to understand but there are plenty of videos online to help you.

Will this sew through 3 layers? Fleece material

Probably on YouTube. 
It’s fairly easy - batteries or electric. Slide to choose speed, you don’t even need the foot pedal. Don’t touch the tension unless you know what you’re doing because you’ll mess up the thread and it will end up “bird-nesting”. Hope that helps!
