A classic ankle harness serves as the focal point of this ankle boot from FRYE. A great boot is all about leather and craftsmanship, and that&rsquo^s exactly what you get in The Phillip Harness. The conditioned, vintage leather makes this boot feel like an old favorite from the first wearing. Classic harness detailing adds to the old-school vibe as does the slightly slouchy shaft. Inside the boot, it&rsquo^s all about comfort with a side zipper for easy on and off, a smooth leather lining and cushioned leather footbed. A durable leather footbed and outsole finish off this boot with a lasting foundation. Founded in 1863 by John A. Frye, a well-to-do shoemaker from England, and family-run until 1945, Frye products have a long and illustrious history. Frye boots were worn by soldiers on both sides of America's Civil War, soldiers in the Spanish-American war, and by Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. When home-steading drew adventurous New England families to the West during the mid and late 1800's many of the pioneers wore Frye Boots for the long journey. Today Frye remains true to its roots with its line of heritage boots, but continues to innovate as it introduces chic new handbags, pumps, and sandals to its collection. See more

Would be 5 Stars if sizing wasn't so off
Totally believe it when I say this boot runs really small. Even reading the previous reviews I got a size 7 which is a half a size larger than what I usually wear and I am sending it back for a size 7.5. I wear a 6 in most sandals and pumps and a 6.5 in boots. I have several Frye harness boots and I wear a 6 in those but have gotten a 6.5 also. I have a lot of frye shoes(sandals, oxfords etc) and boots and all of them are a size 6 or 6.5 except for a Frye Phillip work boot which runs small so I got it in a size 7. That being said, after reading the reviews I promptly ordered a 7 in these and they felt like a size 6. I got my feet inside but only with very thin socks. So they went back. I loved the fit around the ankle so I promptly ordered them in a 7.5.The zipper did seem a little hard to get down but usually that is not a problem with a q-tip and WD-40. When I have other boots that have a difficult zipper, I just spray WE-40 on a Q-tip and gently rub it along the zipper and Bam! It slides up and down like a charm. So if the 7.5 comes and has a difficult zipper then that's my solution to the problem.

Happy Happy.
I love these boots. They are a bit narrow, so I bought some leather conditioner and put a shoe spreader in them overnight and that did the trick. I have flat feet; I cannot wear heels and most days I wear Skechers. That said, these are surprisingly comfy and I can wear them all day without pain. I also got the distressed pair because they were the only ones that were not $300 (I got them for about $79) and funny enough, after using the leather conditioner on them, they look almost new and are a gorgeous, deep, rich brown. I guess the distressing process just dumps a bunch of dirt on the boots! Anyway, I am very happy with these boots and love the way they look and feel.

Great boot for wide feet!
I LOVE Frye boots, but I am on my feel at work all day and cannot wear my heavier Fryes with the 2+ inch heels, etc. These are the perfect alternative. They have the perfect small heel so that you can feel the natural arch in your foot and shoe, and the leather is so soft and natural (even though the boots are red). Speaking of... I was afraid when I bought these that the red would be too vibrant, or that the distressing on the toe would look cheap, but the shade is perfect and the boots do not look cheap at all. The distressing on the toe is just enough. I also have a very wide foot at the ball of my foot, and I have pain when any show is too tight in the toe box, but I ordered an 8 (I am usually a 7.5 in sneakers and other shoes) and there is plenty of room before I have ebb stretched the leather. Great buy! Try to get them when Amazon offers a 20% shoe coupon!

FRYE - Burnt Red Ankle Boot (Phillip Harness)
Thrilled with the slightly vintage look and feel of my first pair of Frye boots. Went up half a size using the Amazon recommendation and I'm glad I did. I normally wear a 6.50 (or 36.50) and bought a size 7. The fit is purrrfect; like a glove. My normal size would have been too small.Adore the back zipper instead of the ugly side ones. Doesn't hamper my ability to walk, talk, or drive my car in any way. Meow. Now all I need is a horse to ride......

Fantastic
For some reason this year I have become obsessed with Frye boots. I ordered many pair, unfortunately some had to go back. The biggest reason was, I couln't afford all of them, but secondly frye's are made with every type of person in mind as far as fit goes. I first ordered the high phillip harnes in burnt red.....wow I fell in love. Once I knew I liked the fit of the Phillip because of its narrow shape, I had to order these. These have a worn finish so they look like you've had them a while. Don't think you are getting a shiny leather...you are not! In all my frye purchases I ordered an 8, I am an 8 and did not think reviews of up or down sizing was necsessary. They are quite comfortable. Zipping can be a little tricky. Work the zipper a few times and then point your toe down and up they will go.

The height on my leg is pretty good - although it would be better if I ...
If I could have given these boots 4.5 stars I would have. But since there are no half star options I erred on the side of optimism. These boots are up to the Frye quality. The height on my leg is pretty good - although it would be better if I were a little taller, but whatcha gonna do about it. I am 5'2". They are a little snug but, as with my other Frye boots, I expect they will loosen a bit as I break them in. I work in a wood shop and wore these all day was quite comfortable. My only issue with them is the zipper that runs up the back is not easy to zip up, it takes a fair amount of tugging. I ran a little wax paper over it and that helped a bit.

...Another beautiful Frye boot!
Although I find these Frye boots a bit narrow compared to my other Phillip harness boot I purchased in grey I am still very happy with my purchase. They are leather so they will stretch. I didn't want to take the time to have them stretch on there own so I have taken them to my local cobbler and having them stretched. I am also having non skid soles put on them as I found my last pair slippery when walking on wet areas. Having said this they are a very beautiful, quality boot. My shoe repair man also said they are a quality boot and by adding the non skid sole I will be adding to the life of the boot. I trust his judgement as he also is a true cobbler who custom makes boots. I would buy them again and most likely will in another colour if I find another good price I can't resist! My Phillip harness boots I wear almost everyday and get many compliments on them. My feet never get sore or tired. The antique brown is a beautiful rich brown. Oh and the zipper was a bit tight on one boot but my husband had to trim a sliver of a piece of leather that overlapped the zipper now it is fine.

Love The Fryes But Get Your Right Size
This is the second pair recently ordered and it is a perfect fit but only after I bought the first pair in the wrong size. I have a vintage 1971 pair of harness 8L, when the company was still family owned and the size is 6.5. It was a perfect fit then and it is now, so I ordered my new pair based on this. Since the family sold out and a Hong Kong Venture Capital company now owns Frye, the sizing is more to today's standards so I had to return the 6.5s and get a 7.5. Also, these boots are clearly not the quality that the family put out but the boots are still very nice. The price on these are fair for the quality of the boot.

Love them.
These boots are the size they are supposed to be and very comfortable. If you have very broad feet, you may have slight difficulty as they are an average fitting, though they may stretch with a good spray of Shoe Ease. They are all leather, the soles are nice and thick and the heels are stacked. I hope, and fully expect, to have many years of wear out of them. When I took a different pair of Frye boots to the cobbler, he remarked that he didn't often see boots of such good quality these days.

Hochwertig.

These are awesome boots
I tried a few Frye styles on in stores before purchasing, and found I consistently needed a half size larger. I wore them around the house for a few hours and they were pretty much broken in. I have fairly bad plantar fasciitis and need to walk a lot every day and have been able to wear these comfortably a few times so far, plus they look awesome and are very high quality. Love them!

Nice soft leather
Nice soft leather. Fits true to size. Mark on one boot by toe that looks to be caused by the dye process. The boot is a brown grey. Box it came in was a little ragged. No paper inside shoes and ripped tissue paper inside box. Maybe boots were returned a few times? Could be due to marking. But it is a nice boot.
