Engaging word-study activities for independent practice, as well as whole-class fun! Students climb to new heights in reading and writing with these fun, engaging, reproducible word-building games! Students read clues on each rung, then change and rearrange letters to create words until they reach the top. All the while, they're analyzing sound-symbol relationships, developing phonemic awareness, broadening their vocabulary, and building spelling skills to become better readers. For use with Grades K-1. Review: Highly recommend - Very clever idea! My student really enjoys these. Strengthens skills in spelling, vocabulary, and reasoning/ problem solving. The book icludes tips on how to make the language more accessible for younger students/ pre-reading level. Such as; reading aloud for students, writing the answers in random order where student can see and copy, etc. Additionally, worksheet can be done entirely aloud or teacher can write the answera for students who cannot write, there are many creative ways to use these, depending on the need. We came back here to buy the next book in the series. I hope they expand the series, these are very helpful brain teasers for a wide age range. Really nice. Highly recommend. Review: Teacher approved! Great for teaching vocabulary and curious kids - As a veteran teacher I am hard to please when it comes to workbooks, but having used these in the classroom for years, I now use them with students I homeschool privately. What I like about these is that they challenge students to think by having to work with words, learn and review old and new spelling patterns and rules, and it teaches them new vocabulary. The students love climbing the ladder and the sense of accomplishment they feel when they figure out words by themselves or learn the meanings of new words. I use these for spelling, problem solving, group activity time, as well as critical thinking. I extend the lessons by asking students to use new words they use in sentences and give extra rewards when they use them in conversation or find them in media. In a multi-age classroom these books benefit every child while challenging even the highest thinker. I highly recommend these books!

Great Resource for EL Learners
This book is such a fun and tricky way to build vocabulary and teach phonics at the same time. My students and I have loved working through this book. As a review, I also go back to review word meanings and celebrate all the new words we have learned.

Good for little learners
I homeschool and my youngest was struggling with phonemic awareness. Word ladders are a great way to show how one letter can change a word.

Great and fun concept, but a little more challenging than expected
Very cute concept. Some words or descriptions are a bit difficult, but it’s helping me work with my child on deductive reasoning and logic skills. My 1st grader (nearing the end of 1st grade) has an advanced vocabulary and still struggles with some of these. That said, it’s a fun learning tool, just maybe not as independent as I’d expected. We are still only a dozen or so pages in though, so perhaps it will get easier for him as he learns how to think them through, even with the words and ladders becoming more complex. We shall see!

Well-made, and very grade-appropriate!
I was an elementary special education teacher before having kids, so I'm very picky about the workbooks I buy, and I homeschool one of my kids, so I'm pretty aware of how the reading and spelling progresses as they learn. This is good! Definitely will be good for both kindergarten and first grade. Right now we're just on CVC words, which is the first 55 pages (110 ladders). I bought this for summer practice, so it'll be about perfect at 1 page per day, along with our other general summer practice book. Next summer, after more phonics, we can tackle the digraphs and vowel blends, which are in the last half of the book.

So much fun!
Our older son has been doing Word Ladders for a few years so I ordered this for my 6 year old, she loves it and can easily do this level by herself. I am sure she will finish it fairly quickly and move on to the next level, but has already learned some knew vocabulary, which is one of the things that I love about Word Ladders!

Great for small groups
This is a great addition for small groups. It teaches students to begin with one word and manipulate one sound to make a new word.

Always a hit
Especially good for the early finishers in the class who want to add to their word bank.
