I have an older 1950s Southbend lathe and have always been happy grinding my own turning bits, but the older I get, the less I feel like doing that constantly. The cost of indexable cutters has also come down to a very reasonable level, and the quality is now well within reach for home shop use. This set is a good example of that overall improvement in value and quality. In my use, this tooling is very much a jack-of-all-trades, master of none setup. I mainly use it for roughing and for non-critical turning, where it works very well. It would have been nice if a couple of extra inserts had been included, but that's not a deal-breaker. The holder itself is extremely well-made and fits nicely into my existing tooling setup. I can really only speak from the perspective of pairing newer tooling with an older lathe, but in that context, this is a very handy tool to have around and easy to recommend.

The toolholder itself is pretty good quality and I don't see any obvious defects with it. It comes with a light coating of the same oil nearly all import tooling comes with. The torx key fits the insert fastener well and works fine. The tool comes with a single insert pre-installed. There's no information about the included insert but it looks like a cheapie. I'd probably grab a set of name brand inserts, but otherwise I think the toolholder itself is rather good.
