Celestial Journal (Diary, Notebook)

I'm not kidding, I have bought about ~13 of Peter Pauper Press's journals since 2021. I love them so much and will continue buying them. My only problem I'm running into now is not having enough new covers to chose from lol! I like the large size but I've happily gone down in size (like with this one)to continue having new covers without repeating ones I've purchased before. But - I know this is a me issue lol. Pros: - Smooth paper (doesn't feel catchy / scratchy when writing fast & smooth feel when writing) - Embossed covers (nice to stim with when thinking) - Ink doesn't bleed through - Stays open / flat - Ribbon to hold place - Edges are pretty gold - Spine even decorated and embossed so they all look awesome together on my shelf. - Gorgeous - Superb quality - Affordable (especially for the quality - thank you so much Peter Pauper Press!) - Good amount of pages (doesn't fill up as fast) Cons: - Addictive (lol) - NEED MORE (lol) - Need more covers to choose from but I will happily decrease the size to have more / even rebuy covers eventually. - Hard to search for the right size I need via amazon (lots of clicking and looking at descriptions since I can't select a size on their company page but that's okay! This notebook is even more beautiful in person than in the photos. The deep blue cover with gold detailing feels elegant and high-quality, and the craftsmanship is excellent—from the binding to the pages. It feels sturdy and thoughtfully made. I bought it as a gift for a friend, and she absolutely loved it.

I always get these journals. They are never disappointing, and I use them as diaries. Always come looking like the image. I'm so obsessed with buying them LOL

Solid purchase, great quality for the amount you spend. Beautiful design on the front, back, and spine. The pages are nice and smooth and i love the spacing of the lines. Love the gold trim on the pages. The ribbon book mark is a huge plus for me in keeping my spot for my daily entries. Beautiful dark blue color on the outside, and feels smooth with lifted texture on the gold designs. I've gone through plenty of journals, definitely one of my favorites.

This is a really gorgeous journal. It’s a reproduction of a 1933 design by Henry T. Wood bindery of London. The celestial design is very pleasing and unusual. The journal is a very pretty cerulean blue with gold accents. The book doesn’t have a flat one-dimensional design; it’s embossed with a beautiful design of the sun surrounded by the planets, stars with borders and scroll work. The page edges are gilded and the spine is embossed in a gold look also with a design of Saturn and stars. The journal measures 6.25 x 8.25 inches. The inside cover and back cover are gold which is an extra added touch and makes it look more expensive. There are 160 ruled pages and a built in blue ribbon marker. I love these reproduction designs of books that were designed years ago. The detail and thoughtfulness back then is a joy to see and it’s a shame books don’t have the same thought put into the covers anymore. What I love about this book is the possibilities. Not only can it be used as a journal but if you are a sky watcher it could be used as a book to write down your observations of planets, stars, eclipses or any other astrologic thing you like. There are how to videos on line that show you how to make your own Harry Potter school books and this one would be perfect for an Astronomy book and maybe even a Divination book. Just do a search for Harry Potter DIY school books and I’m sure you can find it. If not just leave me a note and I will link you. The bindings are tight and the book is well-made. A really lovely journal.

This provides a high quality, visually inspiring writing experience that also satisfies the tactile sense. It is one of several journals I have ordered and it is the home of nature, science, technology and discovery writing for me. I keep what I see as related topics in the same journal in order to keep myself focused This cover tells me, "Think about the discoverers and the changes they helped bring about and how in your lifetime things will change". To me, this cover relates to the image on the Daniel Boorstin book "The Discoverers". I may actually paste that image on the inside front cover. The quality and attractiveness of this book makes writing a more pleasurable and special experience, which is how it should be. There are other ways of writing like using a binder with loose-leaf paper or a computer or a spiral notebook from the grocery store or a legal pad or a dictation machine or even the old Underwood typewriter, but this type of journal is right for me in that it has sufficient permanence and character while not immediately demanding a flawless masterpiece. It's a friendly and recognizable place where your ideas can germinate. This journal has a durable, attractive cover, gold edged heavy weight paper that stands up to fountain pens and dries quickly, It is just the right size for my purposes.

First, I have a LOT of journals. I'm a pen and journal hoarder. It's a reality. These hardcover, lay flat, Peter Pauper Press journals are by far my favorite. I've used both the 7.25 x 9 and this smaller size. Whenever I need another new journal (it actually does happen despite my collection), I automatically go to Peter Pauper Press. The only decisions I ever have to make are 1) how many and 2) what design(s). Every design I've ordered from them (I think I'm on my eighth and ninth journals - I just ordered two more after filling up this lovely journal) has been absolutely gorgeous. I make an effort never to order the same design twice, and so far, that's been very simple. There are just so many beautiful designs to choose from and they are all exquisite. And they are always adding new ones! I have so many favorite features, but some of the things I like the best about these are: 1) They lay flat (sometimes they forget to mention that) (the ones that have the elastic closure - i.e. the really small size, however, do not - at least in my experience. This is only in reference to the 6.5 x 8 and the 7.25 x 9 journals). 2) They have a ribbon bookmark. 3) The paper is really, really smooth and easy to write on. My thoughts tend to go faster than my pen, so I don't want to be further bogged down by rough, hard-to-write-on paper. 4) They are acid-free which means they'll last just about forever. If you are considering whether or not to buy a journal from Peter Pauper Press, particularly the hardback version that lays flat (either size), don't hesitate. You WILL NOT be disappointed!

It hurts me to put only 4 stars for my review but I'm going to only because of a few things. I would give a 4.5 if I could, but not given that option, it's going to have to be a 4. When you place the ribbon between the pages, it creates indents. The pages also feel a little slippery and feels as if certain types of ink will cause the ink to smudge. There is also a sticker that is placed on the back of the actual book itself, but with a little precision and patience, it will not leave any residue on the book and will not harm the embossed cover (Random note: It's interesting to look at the sticker and see the design indented into the back of the sticker after you're done pulling it off). As for the person who mentioned that this journal cover is made of goatskin, I don't think it was. It merely mentioned in the back that it "reproduce[d] a goatskin binding created by bookbinding firm Henry T. Wood of London in 1933." Now for the praise: This is the most beautiful journal cover I have ever laid eyes on. I always had a thing for astronomy so this is the perfect journal to represent me. It is a tad darker than the advertised photo (being a darker navy) but it provides a lovely contrast to the gold embossed on the cover. Multiple ringed planets surround the star in the center and there are curlicues that fan the corners accompanied by wreaths with stars at the center of them. There are spears and a trumpet/horn at the top of the cover. The back is the exact same design -just in reverse. Overall, this cover is a fantastic display. I'm a tad disappointed that the pages do not have a bit of design on their own. Even a simple curlicue at the top and bottom of the pages would have made this journal many times better. But the cover is really the most important part in the visual aspect anyways. As there is a surplus of photos of this journal, I will refrain from posting unnecessary ones. The rest of this review is purely for enlightenment purposes and you may read on if desired. [SYMBOLOGY: Those who designed the cover probably did not intend for the design to mean anything, but just researching for fun, I'd discovered a few things on the spear, trumpet/horn, and wreath. I can see the spear as representing warriors or a great battle. In crests, it represents "gallant service and devotion to honor and chivalry[...]. The spear tip symbolizes skill and dexterity of a person." As for mythology, Athena is seen carrying a spear which symbolizes strategy and wisdom which is the key to victory in war. *******In the cosmological perspective, there is a cosmic-edge riddle posed by Archytas of Tarentum, a Pythagorean soldier-philosopher and friend of Plato who questioned, "what happens to a spear when it is hurled across the outer boundary of the universe? Does the spear rebound or vanish from this world?" *******This meaning seems most relevant. The trumpet contains different meanings and uses across various cultures. In some places, it is deemed to "possess magical powers which enabled [people] to bridge the divide between [our world to the spirit world] and summon a god, rouse the spirit of the forest, drive out demons and so on". in orchestra, the sound evoke the aura of "heroism, power, strength, domination, triumph and noble sentiments". In other cultures, it is seen as the symbol of authority, social standing and warfare and often used in ceremonies. *******But in relevance to cosmology, What shape is a our universe? Picard theorized our universe might be shaped like a trumpet/horn. It might also stand for the Holmdel Horn Antenna used to accidentally discover the cosmic microwave background radiation which became important evidence for the Big Bang Theory.******* As for wreaths, they can stand for joy, victory, life, or death. It can also stand for unity, wholeness, infinity, protection, and balance. *******In cosmology, circles are the "symbolic representation of our luminaries, the sun and moon." Parmenides was a Student of Xenophanes who recognized the Evening Star or Morning Star (Venus), Sun, moon, and planets travel in "wreaths". Even the Milky Way is shaped like a "wreath". Circles can also stand for time and for the cycles of seasons.******* These symbols have many different meanings and can even have a Biblical theme if desired. It is really your ultimate decision on what you want these symbols to represent. But it is still fun to mull over!
