Product Description Max Skinner (Russell Crowe) is a highly successful investment expert with no time for life outside work. When his estranged uncle dies, Max inherits the vineyard in France where he grew up as a child, and his first intention is to sell the vineyard as qui desertcart.com A feel-good movie that highlights the beauty of France as much as it does its stars, A Good Year provides a languid, gorgeous viewing experience. Director Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe--who first worked together on the Academy Award-winning Gladiator--are reunited in this romantic film, which is based on Peter Mayle's book A Year in Provence. Crowe plays Max, a workaholic London bonds trader who doesn't know the meaning of vacation. When his uncle dies, leaving him a picturesque estate in the south of France, Max views it as an opportunity to cash in the vinery and pocket the profits. The film is reminiscent of Diane Lane's Under the Tuscan Sun in the way the scenery plays as much of a role in the film as its characters. The lush village and streaming sunlight portray Provence as an idyllic, magical place. Even Max falls under its spell. While not a particularly likeable character, especially in the early part of the film, Max also isn't a bad guy. When he gets the chance to live life at a less manic pace than which he is used to, he finds that a good year isn't dependant on a financial windfall. Though Scott tries to drum up some suspense in the film (Is the beautiful visitor really Max's illegitimate cousin? Will Max fall in love with the feisty local woman he trades quips with?) nothing that happens comes as much of a surprise. Still, while the film doesn't fully utilize Crowe's range of skills, the actor is charming in his role and A Good Year provides a fine time in the cinemas. --Jae-Ha KimExtras from A Good Year Russell Crowe and Co-Stars on Filming in Provence A Good Year Virtual Vinyard Beyond A Good Year A Year in Provence More from Director Ridley Scott More from Russell Crowe Stills from A Good Year Review: A Good Year - Candy for the eyes & soul. Scott & Crowe together again -- Bravo!!! I love this movie it is a perfect follow-up to Peter Mayle's "A Year in Provence." The character's are perfect, the dialogue snappy, scenery out of this world, and a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours. The women are all perfectly cast; each one bringing along Crowe's character (Max Skinner) in his metamorphosis from tough stock executive to taking on life in a much kinder & loving fashion. Freddie Highmore as young Max is a wonderful match to Albert Finny's Uncle Henry. Everyone should have an Uncle Henry! Even the dog is so typical & loving. I don't understand the panning by critic's of this delightful film, however I hardly ever agree with them. Movies, books, music & art are all in the eyes of the beholder. If Hollywood would make more movies which had these ingredients I would be at the movie theater more often. Even my husband liked this one & he hasn't been to a movie in many, many years. Loving, laughing, some sadness (not too much), but plenty of life to be enjoyed. Review: A Wonderful Film - I was with my wife's family on a weekend away, when her sister said, "OK! Everyone in the T-V room to watch a movie I loved!" That was it for me. I begged off saying I was engrossed in my book. Any recommendations from my sister-in-law have universally been in the "You must be kidding!" range. An hour later, I ambled into the room and watched the last hour of A good Year. Then I borrowed it and watched it again at least ten times! I could tell you the entire story and the film would not be spoiled. But I'll be good and only tell you a little here and there and let you savor it as it develops. Russell Crowe plays Maximillian as an adult and Freddy Highmore plays him as a lad in Provence when he spends summers with his uncle, Albert Finney. As a grown up, Max is a London Bond trader and he makes money. As a boy, you watch him develop into the man. There are women to tempt the uncle; girls to tempt the boy; Wine to enamor them both and France for them to truly love. So this is a love story. It tells of Max's boyhood in which he is too young to know love; his manhood when he is too wrapped in money to understand love; and his survival when love is revealed to him in all its manifestations. Is it funny? Yes. Is it a bit over the top? Not for me! Were all the actors and actresses great? Without question. Did everyone love this film? Not by a long shot. Why not? They viewed it at a moment in their lives when the idea of love could not take them by the hair and shake them and say, "Look you fool! This is what it's all about!" It is what it's all about and getting to that realization makes for a wonderful film. Almost the last paragraph, I promise~! Maximillian the boy is playing chess with his uncle on the verandah of the chateau in Provence. The uncle goes into the house to get a bottle of wine and two glasses (Young Maximillian is perhaps 12 at this juncture. As the uncle fiddles just inside the house with the wine, Max gets the cigar his uncle has been smoking and sticks it in his mouth. He checks his uncle out in the house and readjusts the board when he sees that the uncle is busy. But the uncle has seen this bit of chicanery! He comes out with the wine and says to Max, "Tell me, Max. Have I ever told you why I love wine? It is because when you put it in your mouth it always tells you the truth. It cannot lie." And he goes on to elaborate on this theme. When he is through he asks: "Now Max. Now that I've told you why I love wine, is there anything you have to say to me?" Young Max looks at his uncle, smiles, moves a piece on the chess board and says, "Yes, uncle. Check mate!" And the uncle looks at him and the board and says, "You little sh_t!" There's more. Much more!

Sweet movie with an amazingly lovely setting... transports you!
This is sweet movie with some good humor throughout. The real winner is the gorgeous setting, which pulls you in. I wanted to swim in that pool, sit out on that gorgeous patio, walk through those vineyards. Yes, it is predictable, but I like where the relationships went, and it's a joy to be transported for a couple of hours.

Gentle Humor, the beauty of Provence, and Russell Crowe!
In a change-of-pace from the heavy dramatics and CGI-heavy spectacle that Russell Crowe and director Ridley Scott offered up, in "Gladiator", the warmly romantic "A Good Year" shows a charm and humor that should make this film a favorite of fans of a good love story and the beauty of Provence, for years to come! Based on Peter Mayle's 2006 novel, which, in turn, was loosely based his 1993 work, "A Year in Provence", the film is reminiscent of Diane Lane's 1993 comedy/drama, "Under the Tuscan Sun", and also brings to mind the 1961 Rock Hudson/Gina Lollobrigida comedy, "Come September"; all three films offer romance, a glowing Mediterranean atmosphere, and characters as unconventional as they are, endearing. Crowe is a high-power, unscrupulous but wickedly funny British investment broker, who inherits the French estate and vineyards of his late uncle (Albert Finney, who plays the endearing codger in flashbacks). Under investigation for a more-than-a-little-shady stock transaction, the trip to France gives the broker a chance to let things simmer down, while he unloads the property...but childhood memories, old friends, the arrival of an unknown, illegitimate heir, from America (Abbie Cornish), and a feisty, beautiful local French girl (Marion Cotillard) all conspire to force Crowe to rethink his priorities, as he falls under the spell of Provence. While the film offers few real surprises, the characters are all likable, the dialog is crisp and witty, and there is a tangible magic in the glorious French landscape. All-in-all, "A Good Year" makes a GREAT date movie, and may have you booking a trip to France!

The most beautiful movie!!
My husband & I have watched this five times now & are still touched by the interesting plot plus the wonderful characters. Albert Finney absolutely great, Marion Cottilard gorgeous plus all of the other incredible actors. It’s probably Russell Crowe’s best picture as he is perfect! The French countryside breathtaking & the music fabulous. Of course, we purchased the soundtrack & visited in person the vineyard, the town of Bonnieux & others spots. A movie for all time!

Yeahhhh! Even if you don't like Russel Crowe, (which I do...) he does very well in this movie! And Marion Cotillard? W O W! She is such an amazing woman/actress, very believable!! Albert Finney? Is great in this character!! All in all, everyone seems to fit their characters so well. Even Tatou!! (Chuckle) Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely! Unless you are a total curmudgeon, you will enjoy this this. Pleasurable and amusing from beginning to end. Keyword? Ice-cubes....ouch!
