Fiber Optic OTDR Tester Review: Easy, accurate, inexpensive - This Optical Time Domain Reflectometer is exactly what I needed for testing Single-mode fibers. I've already used this to test and isolate breakages in fiber and broken splice/connector points. It is easy to use, and accurate. Testing for length, and providing reports on the health of the fiber as installed. I wish this would do Multi-Mode as well, but MM is nearly obsolete these days. For the price of this, it's a fantastic tool to have in your kit. Review: Handy Field Tester for Quick Diagnostics - The rugged plastic housing has a solid weight to it and the rubberized corners feel like they could actually survive a drop on a job site. I found that the 1310 and 1550 wavelengths are accurate for a budget tool and the event map makes it easy to spot bad splices without staring at complex traces. The parts fit together well with tight dust covers over the ports although the touch screen is a little less responsive than a modern phone. It performs great for daily maintenance tasks like checking cable length or finding a break in the line. My only minor gripe is that the internal storage fills up fast if you are saving a lot of reports so you definitely need to add your own memory card.
