Ultimate Spider-Man (2024-) #1

This is a very nice introduction to a new and refreshing setting. For people who don't know: Marvel Editorial on the mainline Spider-Man comic has a very shallow view of the character. They think that Spider-Man needs to be young and single to be relatable and appealing. They think his life needs to be a constant uphill struggle where he is just constantly miserable and can't catch a break. And yes, while the classic stories did have a darkness and a realistic edge to them, they weren't unpleasant and miserable to read. You felt sorry for Spider-Man sometimes, but you would never consider him pathetic or his troubles contrived. This new Ultimate Spider-Man is dealing with some hardship. He is a New Yorker dealing with the aftermath of a tragedy similar to 9/11. He has lost people close to him. But he is a stable, functioning adult with good relationships with the people in his life. He is a husband and a father, and there are hints that he is starting to feel some sort of mid-life crisis and feeling unfulfilled with his life. Spider-Man should want to help people because he's a good person at heart. There isn't really much action in this first issue, mostly just setting the stage and establishing the characters. The story is very meta. At one point, the story straight up says that Spider-Man's destiny was stolen from him, which is very on the nose but hey the boot fits. A supervillain has travelled back in time to prevent him from being bitten by the radioactive spider. Peter Parker isn't a scientist here, he still works at the Daily Bugle. Doesn't really make sense to me, but I guess they want to keep some things familiar. Wilson Fisk shows up to buy the Daily Bugle out from under Jonah. That seems like an interesting enough story arc on its own. However, it appears that the Ultimate relaunch is one big crossover dealing with the time travelling villain preventing superheroes from being created in this new world. Iron Man shows up and is trying to give all the superheroes their powers back. Most interesting is that in this timeline, Uncle Ben is still alive and a main character in the story. That is a very big change and I am very intrigued to see where that goes. Aunt May seems to have died in the 9/11 event. So did Norman Osborn, supposedly. Peter and MJ don't seem to be friends with Harry. It is clearly a different world than normal Spider-Man, as much as I would enjoy just a better version of normal Spider-Man I am happy to see this story continue.

Within the first few pages Hickman makes it clear that he both understands these characters and intends on giving them a story they (and the readers) deserve. Hickman understands Peter doesn’t have to be miserable all the time to be relatable to readers. That there is a balance in life, that while there can be great heartache and pain, there is still beauty, compassion and love in life. We’ve all had those moments, where things are going well, but something is missing but you can’t quite put your finger on it. That’s where Pete is at the start of this story. A balance. Life is good but something is missing. I’m very excited for all the new takes on these iconic characters, especially one character in particular that I somehow didn’t expect to have a presence in this story. This feels like going back to the roots but changing the soil. Also thank you for making Pete and MJ married again, can we please not go back on that? Thank you! Seriously though, thank you, I’ve been waiting for a story like this for a long time and I know I’m not the only one.

I was lucky to get a copy of the first Ultimate Spider-Man #1 when it first came out. It was always one of the best series being published. This new version feels like it could be, too. Peter and his family is a glimpse of what the regular series could have been if they hadn't done One More Day. I haven't read any of the latest Ultimate comics, wasn't going to buy this until the collection came out, but was interested enough in checking it out when I saw stories about it online. It's pretty good, so I'll be getting the next couple issues to see where it's going. As always, Hickman wrote a very intriguing and well written story.

I love the idea of giving Spider-man a different starting point. The writing was done really well to the point I would have happily kept reading about normal human Peter’s life. The intrigue is there and I’m excited to continue the story.

Yes okay so I'm just going to be frank about this this comic I think had a lot of ups but I'm also on the fence about one subject. First of all I think this comic did a lot of interesting things as far as setting up the future the fact that Uncle Ben is alive and his best friends with Jay Joe and Jameson I thought was interesting and cool I love to seeing Peter's family and back with MJ and his son and daughter I really enjoyed that also it was interesting to see that Wilson Fisk is running The Daily Bugle or at least seems to be how they set up Harry Osborn as the new Goblin or at least a version of them, and we also got teas that Daredevil might be turning up sometime in the future. But what I'm on the fence about is how Peter Parker becomes Spider-Man Peter basically states in the book that he's needing a change that he feels like he's missing a part of himself which he is and then towards the end of the book we see that Peter has received a message from Tony Stark AKA iron lad who basically tells him that hey you were meant to be Spider-Man but because of of the makers interference you're not and thus gives him a small orb that has a nanotech suit and the original Spider That was supposed to bite him. So my issue is Peter from the outside looking in seems to have the perfect life his uncle is alive he's got a loving wife two kids a good job everything and yet he feels like something's missing and that he needs to make a change for all intents and purposes it seems like Peter's going through a midlife crisis now I fully understand this I think it's very relatable even if everything is going great sometimes we just need a change but considering I've seen other Peter Parker's lives and have read other Spider-Man runs Peter can also kind of come off as maybe being a little bit selfish. I guess it's just really up to the readers interpretation. All in all I think this was a strong start I think this comic accomplished what it's set out to do I am looking forward to seeing where it goes and all I can hope for is that Hickman treats Spider-Man with respect because Lord knows other writers surely haven't.

Beautiful artwork with a compelling storyline. While a young Peter Parker is an Amazing character, it is Ultimately satisfying to see him get the chance to grow up and become a mature adult. In this issue, we are introduced to a cast of likable characters, and the mystery of the changes done to this universe by The Maker. This small glimpse into Peter Parker's world quickly draws you into its web, and I'm X-cited to see what happens next!

Reading this first issue has me pumped for this retelling of Spider Lore. One of the most emotionally resonant comics I’ve read. Deep sense of character, mood and place. I love the dialogue and character development. Most of all, I love how this comic poses the existential question that I feel is rampant in the world, yet dealt with differently depending on the person and season of their life: even though it may seem like our greatest chances are taken from us, what if we had the opportunity to take them back, and in the process reclaim ourselves and our ability to make our greatest contribution to this planet? Encore.

Great new story. Very interesting and unique in my opinion. Pretty excited to see where this goes. I, like most, just hope MJ and Parker stay together. We need an arc where he has her.

Finally a Spider-man comic that makes you FEEL like the writers enjoy Spider-Man I Absolutely love it! 10 out of 10

First of all, I have to say THANK YOU to Jonathan Hickman. This is what I have been missing from Spider-man. This is the way Amazing Soider-man should be. Peter Parker can age, he can mature, and he can handle responsibilities. I love the family man, angle. Peter/Spider-man has always been better with a family and support system. Now if Peter/Sipder-man can fight like he is supposed to thus book will be perfect. This is an awesome start to this book. Though I am going to wait for the TPB, I am really looking forward to learning about this Peter Parker (not the useless man-child of post One More Day), and looking forward to Spider-man the way he should be.

Beautiful style, wonderfully written, filled with lovely little details as a homage to the original universe. An adult, mature Peter Parker who was never bitten by the spider and carries a void within him that he doesn't understand. Until this moment. Can't wait for the next part.
