Can i fit this (at least one side of the plug) through a regular uk letterbox? what is the overall diameter?

This plug will not fit through my letter box. The maximum diameter is 55mm and the minimum diameter is 43mm. Neither will fit through my letter box.

How do you open the plug? I can't figure it out. There are no instructions and all i can see is that you're supposed to use a screwdriver. But how?

Hi, there is a little locking tab at the base of the plug (underneath the single pin). Use a flat blade small screwdriver to prize this little table out. Take care because it can spring out and it may get lost. One the tab has been removed the front and rear sections of the plug can be rotated in opposite directions allowing the two halves of the plug to be pulled apart. If the plug has the cable clamp clamped on to a cable then this will need to be slackened off to allow the rear part of the plug to rotate around the cable.

Is this suitable for an outdoor patio heater

A 3kW patio heater will draw about 12A while a 4kW patio heater will draw slightly more than 16A. I would not use it for more than a 3kW heater.

My reverse polarity light has come on. are these made for continental mkt? no warning or instructions for uk use.

The mkt, is not an issue. Just ensure you connect L to L, N to N, and of course ground. If you've done it correctly, then the problem is with the power source, not your connectors.
