This might be a dumb question, but how do I clean it off? It came wrapped in plastic and covered in oil. Its a gift for my son.

For long term storage spray the sword with Cosmoline RP-342"Heavy" Rust Preventative Spray (Military-Grade) 1-Can. Do this and place in a plastic bag with desiccants. This stuff is used for long term storage for ammunition for DECADES! For short term storage and for wall hanging use WD40 to clean the blade ONLY, WD40 is both a solvent and a H2O (l) displacer... then use "Renaissance Wax Polish , 200 ml" on all surfaces for clean glowing look. Follow the directions on each product depending on the type of storage you will be using. Hope this helps?

Is the handle peened or nut capped?

Mine is peened, over what SEEMS to be a smooth nut. Very nice, lively blade!

did CS ever correct the problems with this model?

Not sure what the problem was - I did not experience any problems with mine. It's a brute.

What is the thickness of this blade at hilt and 1” from tip? I am not looking for CS’s advertised thickness.

About 2-2.5mm, it has a good distal taper. I will say though, this thing is very whipy and overly flexible compared to all of my other swords.
