A challenging product to use
Having found information in numerous places about using gel stain over existing finishes, I was eager to try this stain as I wanted to keep the grain of my old oak drawer fronts but didn't want to strip the original finish. I'm very experienced with oil-based stains and lacquer and am new to gel stain... which I learned by using... is really more like paint. I sanded my material and followed the directions, wiping it off within the first minute or two of application. This resulted in very little color in some areas and horrid brush marks in other places. The material dries very quickly. I tried building coats as recommended on the can to deepen the color. This only exacerbated the earlier issues. In the end I used chemical stripped and took the finish back to bare wood and tried again with only slightly better results. People seem to love this stuff but I'm not sure why. I suppose if you want to just paint it on and leave it, you might have better results but for someone who uses traditional stain, this is an exercise in frustration.
