I am looking for a magnifying lamp for my mother to use to crossstitch. Is the lens clear or green? How large an area does it magnify and is it hot?

Not hot! Magnification good and clear. It is the best I have seen for needle craft purpose cause light is so bright. Use it for knitting

How heavy is the lamp? Would an older person in her 90's be able to move it around?

Probably not. My mom is 90 and she operates it just fine from a stationary position, but it's a sturdy lamp anchored by a heavy platter, made that way so you can extend the head without tipping. She might be able to drag it across the floor but lifting it might be tough.

How do you know which diopter to purchase?

One great and easy trick to determine which magnification is best for you is to USE THE CAMERA ON YOUR PHONE! Without taking a picture, look through the camera at the object you want to magnify (needlework, crafts, reading, etc.) and set the camera magnification first to 1.75 and then to 2.75 and look at whatever you need magnified at each setting. You can determine exactly which magnification strength will work best for you before you buy! I’ve been reviewing different magnifying lamps and surprised that no one has posted this really easy solution yet.

What is the "working distance" with this model (ie. how far away must the object be before you can see it "in focus")? Thanks!

The focal distance is very much like any "magnifier", it depends on the individual using it. Basically this light is used for reading books, newspapers, etc. by my husband whom has macular degeneration. He tends to hold the objects where he would normally hold them. He loves this light, as the shape is oval rather then round and gives him more area, AND, it is very bright light!
